With as much attention I paid to him, he might as well had died.

Hmm, I don't know. I'm not exactly the world's biggest fan of love triangles, so I'd be perfectly happy to have all that bullcrap cut out, but I think Peeta played an important role. It helped to have him around in the second round of the Games (otherwise Katniss would have been running around the arena with entirely new characters) and his subplot was necessary both to the larger plot developments and Katniss's personal character growth in the third book.

Arghh I hate love triangles so much. I see no reason why they are so common in fiction other than to extend the story by two or so pages. There are SOME cases where they both add to the plot AND are well written, but I honestly can't think of one right now.

But I agree with you, Peeta did was pretty important, even in a non-romantic capacity, at least in the third book. His character arc facilitated Katniss's character development.

Still didn't like him though. XD

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I think they sell because of the basic plot function they serve (you can't have things going smoothly for your Destined Couple) and because of the fantasy of having two people fight over you. But God, they're so annoying. It's boring, old, overdone, and it makes the contested character look like a wishy-washy idiot.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I could be wrong on this, but I heard somewhere that Collins didn't want to write the love triangle, but they (her... er, publisher or editors or whoever) basically made her because it's what's ~cool~ at the moment.

I'm not sure how much I agree with that particular sentiment, but goodness knows he bored me to tears.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagree, not because of his relationship with Katniss, but I think it was important to see someone so "good" get brainwashed by the Capitol like that; it made me realize how much power they have and how far they were willing to go to torture people. (Plus, that his huge Book 3 reunion with Katniss ended with an attempted strangling instead of romance was a really nice twist)

He wasn't compelling enough in the first two books for me to really care about his brainwashing. He seems more like a pawn for Katniss to grow than his own character.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. That's why I preferred Gale as a character (and I don't ship him with Katniss, either). Gale at least had his own agenda regardless if Katniss was involved or not.

Yeah, "pawn" sounds about right. I really saw the "brainwashing" thing as a plot device so Katniss could finally come to terms about how she ~felt~ about Peeta. It really had nothing to do with Peeta's character. He always came off as very static. Everything he did revolved around Katniss.

If anything, the brainwashing thing came off as gimmick to make him seem more complex than he actually was.

Peeta-stanning for always.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, that's what I love about him. Peeta's just a decent, kind guy trying to get by. In any other hunger games, he'd have died and his niceness would have made no difference at all in the scheme of things.

As it happens, a lot of factors come together and he gets caught up in events bigger than him. He plays an important part in them - not because he plans to, or because he's special or destined, but just because through pure chance and luck that's how things work out.

That's sort of the point.

Same here. I thought he had a strong personality and was sweet.

Yes I agree with you. I didn't like the tacked on ending to the whole thing, it reminded me of Harry Potter, but I think the story would have been entirely different if Peeta had been killed off, his character is integral.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
SPOILERS FOR ALL 3 BOOKS

Wasn't the whole reason that President Snow had a hardon for Katniss because both lived? Had she been the only one who survived, Katniss would have most likely just gone back to living the status quo. I expect the quarter quell would also not have been what is was, thus making it hard for D13 to break them out and start the revolution.

This! The author probably could have still continued the series if Peeta had died, but the other two books would've probably gone in an entirely different direction.

It would be a pretty interesting idea for an AU, now that I think about it.

(Thanks for that lovely mental image of President Snow with a hardon for Katniss, though. Did you mean to write "hate-on"?)

I feel the same way about Gale, to be honest. Different strokes, folks. Different strokes.

Yeah, if the reason to get rid of Peeta is to scrap the love triangle, I'd must rather ditch Gale.

Really? I thought he was supposed to be the moralizing character. Katniss would have turned out way more fucked up and less sympathetic had she only had Gale to listen to.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
OH NOES! Then we wouldn't have our mandatory YA love triangle!

But seriously, you're probably right. In fact, it probably would have been a lot more interesting if he had died and, say, Rue or Thresh or Foxface had secretly escaped and was just presumed dead with a cannon shot.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I think things would have been better if Katniss had just admitted her feelings for Peeta in the first book instead of dragging things out. It was clear since the first Games that she favored Peeta over Gale so the "love triangle" just felt forced.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
the 'love triangle' felt forced to me as well...i tend to go by the character's thoughts and feelings while reading, and by the simple fact that katniss herself didn't consider it a love triangle, neither did i

also, i can't understand how 'love triangle' is what people talk about when referring to this series, rather than, well, EVERYTHING else it was

Really? In the first book, whenever she was around Peeta she was constantly thinking of Gale. His name popped up so much I almost forgot he was only in the book for a couple of chapters. And her feelings for Peeta always seemed so fake. It's only by the third book I actually took them to be remotely believable.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
He was the only character in the books I really liked. I didn't like the kid who played him in the movie, though. I kept hoping he'd die even though I knew they wouldn't go that far off from the books.

I enjoyed his role in the first two books-- it had a really nice touch of just how dreadful forced romances can be. Had he died around the end of the second book or off-page like Cinna did, it would have probably made the third book far less horrid to read.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Without him, I doubt Katniss would have survived it all.
