Job advice

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-10-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, I could use some others' views...

I'm 25, and in grad school, currently unemployed.

I have two pretty excellent chances of having semi permanent careers already lined up. One of them I have to finish applying to by the end of this week to be considered for this year. I've already had several expressions of interest by this org, when they're notoriously hard to get in touch with.

However, I also have about a dozen year-contract jobs lined up (with renewal available) which are equally awesome sounding and would also give me a decent chunk of funding for grad school. These mostly involve working in other countries, learning the language and culture, etc.

I'm torn between settling down for one of the career jobs, and taking this opportunity to do a bunch of year-long jobs before I finish my MA. On one hand, I feel like I ought to be getting serious about my long term career goals, and start making commitments. But on the other hand, if I don't take these awesome temp jobs, I feel like I'll have wasted the opportunity to widen my horizons in a responsible way.

Any thoughts, guys?

You're still young, so if you really REALLY want to know/live/work at other countries this is your chance! You'll never be younger and/or more energetic than now! (and absorbing an entirely new way of living, working and talking requires a fuckton of energy) You've got time to settle down. However, if your goal in life is finding a nice little corner of the world for yourself and building on that, I'd take the long-term job.

It ultimately comes down to how soon you want to be all settled in. Of course settling for the long-time position won't mean you can't go abroad again, but it's much harder to go live somewhere else once you've got your life organized around an established career. You should sort your priorities first, and weigh the pros and cons (do you have any family that you'd be leaving behind? any relationship? is it hard for you to make new friends? would you feel homesick?).

I hope what I've said makes sense to you, and I hope I've helped.

As someone who has done the year-long-contracts-overseas thing, I second this. The long-term positions (as long as you're not talking about academia) will still exist when you're done travelling.

i'd start off, also, by saying "you're still young" - but in contrast to the other anon i say it from the perspective that travelling when you are older and more experienced in life, when you know yourself better, you can often have a more profound experience, a different kind of appreciation for life and culture which you may not have otherwise been sensitive to in another part of your life

you used the terms "settling down" vs "opportunity"...that to me says that you WANT the travelling but maybe think 'the right thing to do' would be the career...don't do it (or anything in life) because you think it's the right thing to do...there is no right thing, there is only 'right for you, right now'

whatever you decide, do it free from obligation or fear, or any expectation on yourself or from others - that way in future, no matter what happens, you will always know why YOU decided what you did at the time

...i am so excited for you, by the way...what a wonderful time in life :)
