These days with the state of the fandom, it's both columns simultaneously, sigh.

I think this secret is more about handwaving fraternization regulations, which are usually taken pretty seriously, then 'ew your whip is wrong!'

It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it bugs me too. I'd like at least a hand-wave explanation of why it's suddenly okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, for me it's the opposite. I roll my eyes at fics milk the fraternization regulations to the max for ~drama. It's a different world, for heaven's sake. Can we get some new tropes? But then I don't really care about Word of God.

Yeeeeaaaah in general if there's a ship that would have some legitimate roadblocks in canon (and yes, I count Word of God as canon) then I want those to be addressed in some way when I read shippy fic. But in general I'm nitpicky about stuff not having good internal consistency.

There was a post floating around a few months back from someone who is actually legitimately in the military that more-or-less disapproves the whole fraternization thing being a huge issue. (That boils down to it being something that the military more or less ignores until it becomes a conflict of interest thing.) Of course that would clash with the Word of God bit, but, you know. FICTIONAL WORLD and FICTIONAL MILITARY, so these rules may not apply.

All that being said, flogging a dead horse.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually be really interested in that post and what military it concerns.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I really, really wish I had a link to give. It was a very thoughtful post.

Everyone always jumps to the same conclusions in this series; that the Amestrian military maps on to any other military 100%, which is of course impossible. (I mean, look at all the women who had powerful roles in the military in an expy '20s setting.) The fraternization laws are probably going to be different too*.

*I tend not to take Word of God stuff as CANON canon, mostly because I don't play in the manga/brotherhood storyline at all.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, thank you anyway!

And, um, women did serve in military in the 20's and not just in auxiliary roles. Russia had a women's battalion formed in 1917. And they had female aviators as early as 1914 IIRC.

I have nothing of interest to add.
But all human chars in this picture go ":/" and their same-faceness is hilarious to me somehow.

Can't unsee.
