I'd rather have bad Russian I can pretend is good than someone else's voice coming out of Sydney's mouth. That would take me out of it worse.

I'm drawing on my experience hating Gabrielle being dubbed over in the singing parts of the first musical episode of Xena here, but assuming the hatred would cross over into language dubbing.

I think it really depends on how good the dubber is at imitating the tone of the actor they're dubbing (and how good the mixer is at making the voice sound like it's coming from the actor). Disney is amazing with casting singing voices for their animated movies, for example. Pocahontas has one of the most seamless actor/singer duos I have ever heard.

Or sometimes they dub over an actor for no reason (Hocus Pocus) Not that I don't love his voicework :X

I'd say even better than Pocahontas is the seaming done in The Lion King's "Be Prepared," which has Jeremy Irons and Jim Cummings both singing Scar's part. I would never have known it was two people if I hadn't been explicitly told that it was.

I believe the only line that's delivered by a different actor is "You won't get a sniff without me!", because the actor singing the rest of the song blew out his voice at that point. But I could be wrong.

Other seamless duos: Lea Salonga and Mulan and Jasmine's singing voices. Both times she sounds exactly like the regular VAs, who do *not* sound alike. She's amazing.

I've seen two clips from the songs identifying who is singing it during that point so I was under the impression that it was more than that (IIRC, it sounded as though Jeremy Irons started singing the song then had to stop after half of it was recorded or something).

The point still stands that it is not easily noticeable that it isn't being done by the same person.

I also did not realize Jasmine and Mulan had the same singing voice. That definitely is very impressive. Disney is pretty damn good at doing voice-work (not that anyone should be surprised by this).

You wouldn't necessarily notice, though, if it were done properly. Have you ever watched the Wrath of Khan dubbed into German? They work really hard to match the voices.
