I'd rather have bad Russian I can pretend is good than someone else's voice coming out of Sydney's mouth. That would take me out of it worse.

I'm drawing on my experience hating Gabrielle being dubbed over in the singing parts of the first musical episode of Xena here, but assuming the hatred would cross over into language dubbing.

I think it really depends on how good the dubber is at imitating the tone of the actor they're dubbing (and how good the mixer is at making the voice sound like it's coming from the actor). Disney is amazing with casting singing voices for their animated movies, for example. Pocahontas has one of the most seamless actor/singer duos I have ever heard.

You wouldn't necessarily notice, though, if it were done properly. Have you ever watched the Wrath of Khan dubbed into German? They work really hard to match the voices.

Omg this. I know German and Russian more or less fluently, so whenever some generic villains speak mangled deutsch or russky it just makes me cringe. A voiceover would have been so much better!

Of course, for people who don't speak the foreign languages that are used in a particular film, it's all the same. But generally popular films tend to be shown all over the world, so why can't Hollywood bosses think of the foreign audiences who point and laugh at supposedly 'perfect' language knowledge of the film characters...

This so much! In True Blood, when Eric and Godric were posing as Nazis in that flashback i was facepalming so heavy it's not even funny anymore! Does someone know how the (old?) swedish was? I know the actor for Eric is swedish, so he should get it right at least with the modern language, but i have no idea what they were actually speaking there, old or modern...

Seriously, I'm German and half the time I have no idea what the supposed Germans on TV shows are actually saying. That HIMYM episode a couple of weeks ago? I swear I still don't know what the "German" guy's lines were :/.

And funnily enough, every so often when they have someone talk in a "German" accent it just sounds Eastern European to me...

Oh fuck yes.

I loved it when in Captain America, they had some people in the credits for ... I think Croatian accent training, but none for the German accent. Because I think they just go "Oh, everyone can do a German accent, just watch any American movie featuring Nazis and you can do it."

I usually can't even tell what dialect of Chinese the supposed fluent Chinese speakers are talking in...(I'm native to two dialects and I can somewhat understand a third.)

This is what I'd want people to do if I was an actress having to speak languages I didn't know, no doubt about that. As a viewer, though, not so much--as a previous anon mentioned, I'd have a much harder time adjusting to the change in pitch/tone/speed than I do with ignoring their flubs in languages I'm familiar with.

Oh god. Lucy Liu's Japanese in Kill Bill was traumatizingly awful. The worst part was that Uma Therman's was better and Liu was supposed to have been born and raised in Japan.

I do think that's a universal thing, though -- and it isn't just Americans doing accents badly. There are entire episodes of Sons of Anarchy where I want to smack Charlie Hunnam's dialect coach. As much as people complain that Americans don't get the dialects right, there are an awful lot of generic attempts at accents that will in no way match the location of the characters. Some of the actors on Spooks playing American characters were just plain terrible.

At least they try? With SJWs and couch critics tearing everything any actor does apart, maybe some of this stuff should just be let go.

OMG, yes, so much yes!

Or if they do not like paying a native speaker to do it or they are afraid the change in the voice will be noticeable, just have them keep speaking in English with a quick subtitle indicating which language they are supposedly talking in. Whatever they want, just so they stop butchering innocent foreign languages that never did them any harm.

Hollywood, take note: it's horrifyingly embarrassing... and it does nothing to show your international audience how multicultural you are. On the contrary,really. Gah!

This secret reminds me of a scene at the beginning of, I think it was Stuart Little 2. One of the alley cats gets thrown out of a restaurant, and something was nagging me, and then I realised the shop owner who had thrown the cat out was speaking in proper Cantonese. I sat there all giddy for a while after the fact. It's nice when the effort is made to make it right.

This is why I will forever love Quentin Tarantino for his casting in Inglourious Basterds. Imagine if there had been only Americans, trying to speak French and German.

For some very weird reason, the German version dubbed most of the American characters' dialogue. Way to ruin things. But I have to say, I kind of prefer that Shoshanna was secretly able to speak German instead of English. It just makes more sense that she'd address the German audience in German at the end. Also, it makes more sense that Landa would switch to German in the beginning. Why would he switch from one foreign language to another? I mean, obviously, he was fluid in both, but still.

does this mean, as a native english speaker with a tin ear for good vs. bad pronunciation and accents for other languages, that almost every time I see a native english-speaking actor pretending to speak another language fluently I can mentally dub parts of this over them to get the same feeling? because, awesome.

I once saw a clip of some American TV drama where there were supposedly two guys holding a conversation in "Finnish". Except it wasn't even an attempt at Finnish but some complete gibberish the actors came up with as they went. I know it's a pretty obscure language but whoa...

Fluency does not mean "able to pass as a native speaker". It means that a person is able to understand and communicate at an extremely high level. Accent and poor pronunciation is not included in that.

That being said, if the person is attempting to pass as a native speaker and mangles the language, a really good dubbing job would probably be better.
