In a way, I feel this secret conveys my frustration with the Jack/Ianto ship and why I avoid most slash badfics with them in it. There's nothing wrong with the ship. It's just that most people don't acknowledge Jack is pansexual and Ianto is bisexual. It's gotten so bad that I have a list of slash writers I avoid every time the Torchwood Three newsletter goes up.

Exactly! I also especially hate this in the Torchwood fandom.

Blame series 3 and 4 canon. The PtB made Ianto gay for Jack, and Jack gay, gay, gay.

Except where he was always randomly pining for Gwen.

This is pretty much it.

I think the really good writers of Jack/Ianto don't do that at all, there are some writers of badfics who do, but most acknowledge the past relationships of both characters without claiming that Lisa or Estelle were some kind of beards. .

Ick, I didn't even know Ianto was bi. I only watched a couple of episodes and gave up with the show, but saw so much about Jack/Ianto and everyone always described Ianto as 100% gay. :/

I don't think Ianto really even considered himself bisexual tbh. When his sister asked if he was into dudes he said "Only Jack" so it seems like he may consider himself mostly straight with one exception (of course, he could have very well been lying to her if he was afraid about how she would react to him being attracted to guys in general)

Ianto had a girlfriend in the beginning.

... and anyone who tells me he didn't love her can go chew on a lemon.

I haven't read much Torchwood fic, but I'm kind of scared of this happening. :/ For one, I'm scared people will invalidate Ianto's love for Lisa (I think that was her name? Feel free to correct me). I also really don't want to read Gwen bashing. So yeah.

I also feel bad for reading a Gwen/Ianto fic once, and enjoying it. Because Ianto had a canonically queer relationship, and I know straightening gay characters is problematic, but he's actually bi, but it's still playing to heteronormative ideals, and argh what's wrong with me, I usually like slash better than het, why can't I just read Jack/Ianto and be happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't really happen because Lisa is pretty sacred to Ianto, hence most writers recognise that. I think if you try and avoid the Gwen bashers and read some of the good quality highly recced stuff you should hopefully avoid those pitfalls. It seems quite a common thing that Gwen bashers will put it in their warnings.
