I'm okay with it for some characters but for others it just...doesn't work for me. Like, John Sheppard for SGA? I could definitely buy bisexual. But gay? Ehhhhh. Not saying it's impossible or anything (I mean, you could definitely work the "he's in the military and he feels pressure to hide his true sexuality by acting like a ladie's man" angle, but I never really liked that much) but I got tired of seeing all these "he's secretly gay" fic.

I feel like Glee actually did this in-show. In one episode, they have Santana saying she likes having sex with literally everything (including a vaguely human shaped shrub). I liked her as a woman who was very in touch with her sexuality and knew what she wanted and wasn't picky about who she got it from. She wasn't ashamed of herself and didn't care what people said about it. And then all of the sudden (I think it was like the next episode) she realizes she was a lesbian all along and we got a bunch of stupid angst about it for a while because Glee needs drama and shoe horning moral life lessons into shit. Again, I'm not saying it's impossible that she was a lesbian the whole time. But I feel like there should have been some kind of deep soul searching and an epiphany of some kind and Glee just...didn't really make me buy it.

Glee treats everything except homosexuality like a joke. Kurt said something about bisexuality as a cover for people trying to tiptoe back into the closet, every single opposite-sex couple has drama coming out the ass, etc., etc. At this point, I'm just watching to make fun of inconsistencies. They're big enough to see from space.

ayrt

This is true. I know that Glee is so dumb that getting offended by it is pointless at this point in a lot of ways, but I just can't help but side eye it

-sigh- I'm pretty sure every other comment I write shows my utter lack of internet savviness, but what does "ayrt" mean?

I feel like Glee is like Twilight. There's a lot of potential and some fanfic writers can do amazing things with it. Unfortunately, the source canon squanders that.

I'm the opposite about John Sheppard, he never seemed to have any chemistry with women and didn't seem to reprociate their interest (only in some exceptions - and he was either mindcontrolled or taken over by lizard, so...). It worked for him. But it mostly doesn't work for others.

But wasn't he married? So he is a perfect example. You want to make him a user and a liar because that's somehow better than just going with canon?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well he's already not a good person. *shrug*

In fairness to Glee (can't believe I just said that, I've gotten so sick of that show), I think they kept Brittany bisexual - from what I remember Santana just did the whole "I sleep with everyone" thing to cover her tracks, but Brittany really was/is bisexual. I'm not really sure though.... I don't think Ryan Murphy's sure.

Ugh, that Santana stuff. It's not like they couldn't have had a lot of angst about her coming out as bi.
