Well, the problem with the first request is that any analysis of the two parties is in itself somewhat biased and partisan - you can have, I guess, an unbiased analysis of the financial elements of politics, but for the most part, any critique or analysis of the two major political parties is going to be founded on the political understanding of the author. So there's really no one good answer to this - understanding comes from reading, assimilating, and analyzing a variety of perspectives, I think.

One essay I do want to recommend because it's very good and also incredibly relevant is Douglas Hofstadter's "The Paranoid Style In American Politics", which is a very historical analysis of the roots of certain tendencies in American politics. It was written in 1964 but I think it's even more relevant now than it was when it was written, and I think helps in understanding the mindset of many people in American politics.
