THIS. My biggest problem is when an author brings the dead wife back to life (time travel, zombie, vampire, ghost, etc) just to prove how the widower is so much better off with his best friend, and his best friend is awesomesauce, and more beautiful than the dead wife ever was, and then widower decides he loves the best friend more than he ever loved anybody, including that woman he was married to, whatever her name was. And anyway the best friend has a dick, which is so much better than a vagina. Bonus points if the best friend is then turned into the girl in the relationship and only bottoms, ever. I didn't know authors could be so insecure and threatened by a old lover, let alone a fictional dead and buried wife, but it's true, oh it's true.

I don't think I've ever come across that specific trope (I've definitely seen fic where the wife is killed off so the guy could bang his bff, but I've never seen her brought back to life to show how much better the dude is than her), and I'm pretty glad...

Or the wife is around long enough to have kids because the author wants the dude to have children when he finally bangs his bff soulmate. Then the wife is either killed horribly or just leaves or is villianized because she and her vagina are the worst.

I have never seen what you are describing and it is making me sad. Links?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll see if I can find you the tv tropes page. Somebody linked to it from fs within the last few weeks and I wish I hadn't looked.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
...that happens? I've never seen that happen. D:

In T&B sometimes... Kotetsu still cries over his dead wife and some fics treat him like "but its ok because I have Barnaby's ass!".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no. DDDD: I've been wanting to join T&B fandom, and I've never seen anything but love for Tomoe. I am not surprised to see this (the kink meme is a wreck of ooc and horrible ideas) but I'm still just really disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's a lot of love for Tomoe and all, specially in fanarts and some fanfics when they really made Kotetsu missing her. So probably I have seen some bad seeds. Still, the T&B fandom is quite nice (although I agree about the Kink meme, adding also that they tend to forget the other characters too :C ).

Ugh yes. Although my least favorite trope is "he knew it wouldn't last"/"something just wasn't right about that relationship"/"it was destined to fail", reducing the prior relationship(s) with women to nothing but confusion and idle mistakes that the character never genuinely thought would work and was never really emotionally invested in. Which is especially infuriating when the relationship in question was a really big character-development moment for the male character.

+1

It makes me sad when slash relationships are written to be superior than het relationships.

I once read a slash-fic where all the POV character's sexual experience with women was sub-par because they just lay there and were nervous or only putting up with it for the man's sake, and a big deal was made out of the fact that fucking men was better because men "fucked back".

Bull. Fucking. Shit.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-10-27 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That and because men are so much bigger and stronger and they don't have to worry about hurting them. They don't have to hold back anymore and can really have fun with sex!

Yeah no.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I hate those fic. it's just depressing that women write most of them. It makes me sad when I think about what their sex lives must be like (if they aren't virgins)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta love that and the "You won't break me! I'm not a girl!" crap.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I have seen this where the guy is at his second wedding ceremony to his "true love" and compares it to his first marriage being fake horrible shit that makes him sick to even think of it now. While he's standing at the altar. Now that's some happy wedding thoughts!

Yeowch, I have an OT3 with best friend and canonically dead wife and I almost wish my fandom was big enough to see this happen and laugh at it.
Almost.
