WHYYYYYY do so many people who ship popular pairings feel the need to be considered 'canon'?

like if you've already got lots of fic and art and discussion and fans, why does it matter if the canon material ~acknowledges~ the relationship or not?

I really want to know when having tons of fanworks for a pairing stopped being enough. Kids these days, I swear.

On the contrary: I'm often scared at certain pairings becoming canon because I always think it would be quite awkward to watch them try to get to people together just for the fanservice.

As petty as it sounds it's because they just want to be on the winning side. Most fandoms have heated pairing wars and usually the popular pairing is not always the eventually-going-to-be-canon pairing.
