They got a bit of mileage out of "Mr. Garrison is a woman" but I didn't get the impression that they were being any more hostile than the countless other groups they lampooned.

I mean if you want to see them actually ATTACK something see their episodes on scientology.

Even when they poke fun at certain groups or issues, you can tell if they're supportive or derisive of them. For example, even when they make jokes about gays, they still have episodes where they say it's ok, that reparative therapy is harmful and leads to suicide, that gays should be allowed to get married, ect.

Compare that to the stem cell episode, where someone tells Christopher Reeves "Using stem cells is like playing God. You should leave nature alone. I'm saying that sometimes you need to just live with the cards you're dealt, Christopher." and he's portrayed as a crazy guy who eats fetuses.

There was nothing of that level in the Garrison episode, though.

I loved that episode with all my heart. I know Butters is just supposed to be silly and naive, but the "I think God must be a little bit gay too" speech was amazing.

I didn't even see the stem cell one as particularly in the "against" field. Maybe I am naive as Butters, but I just thought they were going with the perception held by those who are opposed to stem cell research. I generally consider the ones where they're taking a strong opinion to be the ones that invoke a serious emotional reaction, such as the boy's trying to get Kenny back in the Terri Schiavo episode.

Matt and Trey also said that they had held off the Christopher Reeve parody for a while, in which Reeve was sucking the stem cells out of fetuses. Trey said, "For a long time we're like, 'You know what? Maybe that's not cool.' So that was one of the few shows where we came up with the idea and spent a whole season not doing it. And then the next season where, you know, we're like, 'We're out of ideas, we're out of ideas,' we're like, 'We've got the 'Christopher Reeve sucking stem cells' idea.' 'No, that's really too brutal.' And it just so happened that he was on Larry King that night. And actually, Anne Garefino, our producer, is, a lot of times, our sounding board, because she seriously goes to church every Sunday morning. She's the one that's always going, 'You guys, no, no, no.' And that's when we know we're onto something good. But then we had seen him on Larry King, and we're like, 'You know what? F**k him. He really is taking up this cause of 'Everyone needs to help me out.'' Right before he died, I think he started going a little crazy, but he started getting really weird about it. And then Anne saw him on Larry King and was like, 'Yeah, you know what? F**k him.'"

I stand corrected, then.

The gay camp episode was still amazing. :p

Well, at least it sounds like they were just anti-Christopher Reeve rather than anti-stem cell research.
