So what are major examples?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Your secret says "pic related, but a minor example". If the Avengers is a minor example, what's a major example? I'm trying to think of other cash-cow franchises that were initially great but went down the toilet later on...

Mmm, maybe OP was thinking of X-Men 3, Spider-Man 3 or Batman and Robin... But I'm not sure.

My mind jumped to the eldritch abomination that was X3, but if we're deviating from just superhero movies...I dunno. Star Wars, maybe?

I'm not OP, but I can think of a few that were probably cash cow franchises. Saw maybe? Underworld definitely, probably the Mummy, X-Men, Spiderman, Shrek. With the exception of movies based on comic books, usually the franchises that get the most criticism are those where there was clearly just one story to tell (and only one necessary movie) and then they kept trying to build on that.

For anime, it'd be Dragonball GT. They tried to fix things by the end, but I honestly can't even watch it at all.

I know even Akira Toriyama admitted that he wanted to end things at Freeza, but his editor kept demanding more.

X-Files.

Not sure if it counts as a Cash Cow, but Land Before Time 87 was pretty weak...

Hahahah The Matrix. Star Wars. Recently, Taken. Paranormal Activity. Saw. Those are just the ones that come right to mind.

Though TV shows are probably worse. We might live in the age where if a film makes money, there will be a sequel, whether there should be/needed to be or not, but sadly, we live in an age where most TV works that way too. And TV shows need new episodes so often that the lack of new ideas becomes even more painfully apparent.

The Superman movie franchise has been pretty awful since Superman 2. Semi-related: I have a great fondness for Smallville, but I still can't believe it was on for as long as it was.

I'm still pretty amazed that The Simpsons is still airing. I do not know a single person who watches it regularly or enjoys what it's become and it's been like that for years.

Pirates of the Caribbean and Men in Black come to mind as well

But the third MIB movie was miles better than the second!

And the fourth Shrek was better than the third. They're still cash cow franchises. :)

I want to say the Transformers movies, but if I'm honest with myself even the first one wasn't objectively very good. XD

But, let's see... Saw. Dear God, that franchise just won't die. Paranormal Activity, too... I didn't even realize there had been a third one and there's already a fourth out.

It was still orders of magnitude less bad than the others, though.
