So...no more Avengers or Iron Man, etc? That what you saying?

At first I thought this was a secret about how TPTB shouldn't tease you about Steve/Tony (since you used a picture of the two of them) because you know it'll never happen and you'll be disappointed. Then I actually read the whole secret... lol.

Eh, IDK what to tell you, this was the first Avengers movie. Even if the other movies don't turn out as good as this one, I don't agree that they 'should just give up now'. I want to see where they take the franchise. (Now do I want something like six Avengers movies? No. But more than one I approve of.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
blah blah blah. More fanthing whining that because they made more of it, now it sucks. blah blah blah.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They should keep on making those movies, even if there's a small chance they will make something as awesome as Avengers, because if they do it'll be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope.

I am looking forward for Iron man 3 too much! Though Captain America 2 and all those other movies don't really interest me. But they do others!

How many more of the secrets are we going to get? (Personally, any chance to stare at Kat Denning's hair, Chris Evans mouth, Tom Hiddlestone's eyes, and Cobie Smulders' everything is a good one.) Seriously, Hollywood is never going to quit milking a franchise for all it's worth. This isn't exactly a new phenomenon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

All of it, really, but mostly the part about how this is never going to stop. Hollywood is a business, and as long as there's money to be made, they're going to keep the franchise going. Especially with something as massive with as many moving parts and as many people invested as the Marvel film franchise - it's not something where one person has enough control to stop the machine from moving. It's gonna be how it's gonna be.

And the thing to remember is that, whatever they come out with, however bad it is, it doesn't change what already existed. That exists, and it'll always exist, just like it already does.

Pretty much, yeah. At this point I'm actually grateful; they KNOW that this franchise is a cash cow, but the Avengers was a really well made movie, even though they could in theory slack of and make crap. I've really enjoyed all the movies so far (except for the Hulk ones, but they don't necessarily count as much as the recent ones).

But there's no way this will stop. Avengers took the world by storm and made SO much money, that they're going to make more until it doesn't. It's how the business works.

1. I totally ignored the text of this secret for approximately sixty seconds while I stared dazedly at the image of RDJ in that gloriously drool-worthy getup. A+ background pic, OP.

2. I get the protective "nooooo don't ruin it!" feeling, but honestly, in ANY franchise, a few years after it ends? No one will care if it went downhill. If the subsequent movies turn out bad, pop cultural osmosis will let people go into the franchise with the knowledge "haha yeah the later movies sucked but the ones before were so cool!" It's not gonna bog down the whole franchise or color anyone's opinions of the parts that were good, or retroactively destroy the earlier installments. Did the Star Wars prequels ruin Star Wars? Nope. Did Superman II/IV/Returns ruin Superman I and II? Nope. Did Batman and Robin or Batman Forever ruin Batman or Batman Returns? Nope. Did any Disney sequels ruin the original Disney film? Nope. Don't be so overdramatic. Yes, it sucks to have high hopes that get dashed, but c'mon, hon, it's not THAT big a deal. Sigh, shake your head, and be gleeful over the fact that a ruthless moneymaking machine like a summer blockbuster franchise managed to produce something so awesome and enjoyable at all.

And what's so bad about having rock-bottom expectations? Rock-bottom expectations have led to some of the best movie experiences ever for me.

Weeeeell, technically, I think Batman and Robin sucking so much is what put the kibosh on a potential Gotham Central series--Warner didn't want to risk another live-action fiasco.

But I've never been a "stop early to keep it good!" fan because even when things start flagging, there's still some good storytelling that can come out of it. I'm a big M*A*S*H fan; everyone always says it got bad toward the end, and it's kind of hilarious that a 3-year war lasted 11 seasons, but it ended with "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" and that was worth it.

Plus, the reckless spender in me figures the more movies/series they get, the more swag they put out. I can't wait to buy a bunch of official "Agent of SHIELD"-type stuff.

Funny fact: Just watched both Iron Man movies today. And the first thing I see when I open fandom!secrets? Tony Stark in the first two secrets. Instant win :D

But, yeah, I get how too much of something may not always be a positive thing. Especially if they ruin characterization or plot. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I could understand if you were talking about the comic books, because they're going on for 50+ years and it's not new or surprising to anyone that a lot of ideas are rehashed and there's nothing new or original anymore…

But the MCU? Seriously? Captain America 2 sounds amazing, Avengers 2 too, and Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 sound like you typical action movies with tons of money to spend, which isn't too bad, and it's not like any of the previous movies were cinematic masterpieces that a few fun-action-flick movies will really dampen the entire experience.
terabient: Teenage Thor, thinking (Marvel: teen!Thor thoughtful)

Hmmm. I don't know if the Avengers movie would be the best thing to end on. At least, when I watched I was excited at the prospect of seeing these characters and their universe grow and evolve over the next few years. I'm wary of Thor 2 but that's mostly because it sounds like it has waaaaaaay too much going on for one movie (and the first one already suffered from an overstuffed plot), but the rest I'm pretty excited for.

But in general I agree with you, OP. There have been so many shows and books that have continued past what should have been a clear ending point and just become painful to watch. (the Arrested Development renewal, for example, is something I just cannot see working out well. :/ )

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 07:45 am (UTC)(link)

This, and it sounds like it's going to be a massive tone shift from Thor. The leaked details, if they don't turn out to be a hoax, make Thor 2 sound like it's going to be on the dark and serious end of the spectrum, whereas Thor, while it had its serious moments, was definitely on the light and fluffy end. Even if I didn't love the fluffiness of Thor, that dramatic of a tone shift is really, really hard to pull off well.

Lol but there's only been one Avengers movie? In essence the craze has just begun. I think that when there's been like four and they're still happening, you can come back and complain.

So what are major examples?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Your secret says "pic related, but a minor example". If the Avengers is a minor example, what's a major example? I'm trying to think of other cash-cow franchises that were initially great but went down the toilet later on...

Re: So what are major examples?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, maybe OP was thinking of X-Men 3, Spider-Man 3 or Batman and Robin... But I'm not sure.

My mind jumped to the eldritch abomination that was X3, but if we're deviating from just superhero movies...I dunno. Star Wars, maybe?

Re: So what are major examples?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not OP, but I can think of a few that were probably cash cow franchises. Saw maybe? Underworld definitely, probably the Mummy, X-Men, Spiderman, Shrek. With the exception of movies based on comic books, usually the franchises that get the most criticism are those where there was clearly just one story to tell (and only one necessary movie) and then they kept trying to build on that.

For anime, it'd be Dragonball GT. They tried to fix things by the end, but I honestly can't even watch it at all.

I know even Akira Toriyama admitted that he wanted to end things at Freeza, but his editor kept demanding more.

No way. As long as they continue to hire RDJ and he continues to be an adorkable Tony Stark, they can milk the franchise for all it's worth.

honestly this is why i've stopped going to movies and watching tv. i'm tired of seeing things that were interesting at the beginning get driven into the ground because the producers and directors milk them dry.

Really? Because everything they have planned seems pretty fucking awesome.

The stories, the lead ups. They know what they're doing. As long as they keep the fan service and pandering down, they're bound to live up to their success.
