I hate "We're Not Gay, We Just Love Each Other" so, so much.

And yeah, previous relationships should be acknowledged if you're writing something that's supposed to be canon compliant. But depending on the character, I don't think being closeted, or having less passionate feelings for a previous lover is automatically a bad thing. It all depends on how it's done and who you're writing.
