What I hate is when the writer feels the need to completely trash the existing/past het relationship in situations where it's totally unnecessary, i.e. the canon het relationship isn't serious and may not even have been going on for very long. Can't you just say they didn't work out and leave it that? Make it a mutual break-up without cheating and drama?

I hate it even more when the canon het relationship isn't even canon officially, just strongly implied feelings or the type of ship you know will get together in the end.

Sure, that pairing is pretty much endgame. But do you really need to bash it? You could just say they have a close friendship and leave it at that. But nope, people feel the need to bash it or call the girl a whore/annoying/clingy/screechy. :/

Yeah... especially when breaking an established couple up could be good story fuel. I remember an RP I did with someone where our characters got together, but the character I was playing was someone who's usually assumed to be with another character. (I like both ships. I was just RPing with someone who played B rather than A.)

I actually had a lot of fun with tackling why my character would leave A, how he'd feel about it, how the new relationship would change his outlook, why he was ready for it, what that would make awkward, etc.

But too often people ship one pairing and scoff at another and "get it out of the way" rather than let their character have... actual feelings about his (or her) past.
