Nope, just a little racist.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Explain the racism to me on this one (honestly confused). He's Chinese and he's a cook, IIRC, so...could theoretically cook food at Chinese restaurant?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of looks racist because in much of the US, it is (or at least was for a long time) a fairly offensive stereotype that all Chinese people work in Chinese restaurants and all Chinese restaurants are run by recent Chinese immigrants, and from that perspective, the secret looks like it's based on that stereotype. (I have no context for the show etc., though, so I have no idea if that even applies to the secret.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
all Chinese restaurants are run by recent Chinese immigrants

If you define recent as "within the person's lifetime" and Chinese restaurants as "not nationwide franchises", then it's less of a stereotype than a generalization.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
...I take it there hasn't been a "Elvish* food isn't really Elvish* food and shouldn't be called such because the people running those restaurants aren't Elvish*" complaint over there yet?

(*= Insert nationality here)

The food served in American Chinese restaurants that are run by Chinese people isn't even technically Chinese. It's some weird Americanized version of what Chinese food might be like if it were made in a way that was terrible for you.

This character is Chinese. He has a Chinese restaurant in canon. Cooking is a BIG part of his character as a whole, and there's a whole episode dedicatred to how he teaches his friends (who are from everywhere in the world) that food can be important not just for survival, but to show affection and help themselves and others. So yeah, to this particular Chinese character, food is a vital part of his life -- even more so considering that, with it, he saves others's lives (i.e. he taught one of the aforementioned friends how potato plants were really like, and the friend found potatoes when he and someone else were about to starve, thus indirectly saving two lives.)

So I don't think the OP is racist at all, just recalling a detail that is very important to this character ina cute manner. You, on the other hand, are acting like a baby and attempting to force YOUR own trains of thoughts on someone who hasn't said anything THAT horrible, solely to make yourself look good and oh so righteous. Have fun falsely accusing people of racism for saying something you don't like w/o bothering to look at the context, anon commenter!

Meanwhile, you overreact to equivocal statements on the internet and invent ad hominem stories to explain to yourself why someone would say something that you don't like.

You're speaking about yourself there.

da

I love how you refuse to address how YOU assumed someone was racist because they liked a fictional Chinese chef, instead bawwwwing about how evil the commenter is and ignoring their explanation about the canon itself.

can't handle having your prejudices thrown back at you, sjw?

...can anyone tell me who this guy is and where is he from? I SWEAR I do recall seeing him on TV when I was very little, but I have no idea in hell who he is and have been wondering for some time.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
His nose reminds me of the doctor from Astro Boy but his hair is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
He's Chang Changku (or 006) from Cyborg 009.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's Cyborg 006 (or Chang Changku) from Cyborg 009.

I think what OP means is that, since in canon Chang is an amazing cook and did in fact own a restaurant at one point, the idea that he cooked the food makes it taste all the better.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP here~

That's exactly it! I pretty much pretend I'm going to his awesome restaurant.

It's the dorkiest thing but it makes it so much more fun to imagine him behind everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I only half-remember an episode I saw a long time ago, late at night... but from what I do remember, he had taught some of the other cyborgs to cook? And one in particular was really happy he knew how to make a bread dough from minimal ingredients because he was able to help a village going through a drought? For whatever reason, that was the COOLEST THING EVER as a kid. (I'm still a little hopeless baking without an ingredient list, though... >_<)

Chang Chang Ku - Cyborg 006 from Cyborg 009.

That's adorable, OP!

CYBORG 009 SECRET! *_*

Honestly, I think Chang would be horrified by the North-American 'Chinese Food' that I eat. Wish he actually had a restaurant chain like he does in the new movie (which I need to find online, STAT). I'm sure it'd be miles better, even as a chain brand.

Preferably with G.B. as my charming waiter, because really, where there's one...

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It probably would be better! I sort of picture it being higher-end chain with every restaurant being called "Chang Changku at (location)."

OMG, charming waiter GB would be worth even the most expensive meal in the world.

(Ditto on the new movie, too!)
