I know - it was not that I expected her to be all over it - but I really thought that she would refrain from making such biting and hateful comments. That's what I meant. But you're right I shouldn't care, I hate that I do. :/

Well, you have to see it from her POV: she's the actress, not the character. When you say, "So would Seven of Nine and Janeway ever do it?", she interprets that as "You and Jeri Ryan are hot. Would you ever bone?" and responds thusly. In general, it's really not good conduct to ask about possible sexual relationships between characters to the live action actors, especially when that relationship would go against the actors' sexualities. It's become disturbingly common of late, but you have no reason to expect even a polite response to such a question.

She's also probably been asked that same vein of questions many times and appreciates it less every time.

I cringe in such second hand embarrassment when I think about what Jensen Ackles and Jared Whatever has to put up with in the Supernatural fandom - and not just in regards to their characters either. *shudders*

I mean, the number one rule of RPF is don't mention it to the celebrities. I have no idea why live action show and movie fandoms don't understand that the actors (correctly, imho) interpret character sexual relationship questions as questions about how attractive the actors find each other.

Ugh. Poor Jensen Ackles can't get through a con without some fangirl asking him whether he thinks Dean and Castiel will ever bone.

I get what you mean seriously. She was talking about the J/C pairing, 7/C pairing, she even brought up Janeway/Paris for god sake.
I get that there is a difference between the actor and the character, obviously - that was never the question. But when she goes on and on about relationships like that, she can't expect some people (who are interested) just not to ask. I was just shocked. I get - and understand - if she is not a fan of the pairing - no harm done - but her choice of words shocked me (and I was not alone). It was not okay. And you turning it now that I don't get the difference between the relationship between a character and a RL person is just ~sweet.

(And for the record, I didn't ask her anything and would never bring up a sexual relationship to anyone male or female in front of hundreds of people or anywhere)

Can you tell us what she said that was so horrible? Was it just about J/7?

I'm wondering too. In general KM's been kinda down on all ships, even the popular J/C. She makes jokes about "What am I supposed to do? 'Hey, Chakotay, my ready room, five minutes' and get in a quickie before battle?" or something along those lines. She says she was opposed to Janeway getting involved with anyone.

She kind of likes to deflate people's balloons. She's also very strongly opinionated. Sometimes it makes me cringe and sometimes I applaud her.

I don't think they were saying that you don't get the difference. I think they were saying that actors are often approached by people who ship their character with another for creepy reasons, and that said actors begin to get defensive as a result.

Or, to put it another way: some fans can't separate character relationships from RL relationships, and unfortunately they've ruined it for other people.

And as such the fallout rains down on everybody.

You're kind of bouncing around what I said and interpreting it your own way. All of those pairings are male/female. That's a different ballgame than asking about a femslash pairing. Mulgrew has no way of knowing whether you're being creepy or are genuinely interested solely in her opinion of the characters' possible sexual relationship. You've still refused to say what she said, so please stop acting like we are defending some sort of offensive comment.

I never said that you don't understand the difference. It doesn't matter, anyway- it's only important that Mulgrew had reason to assume that you didn't.

You in my dialect is used the way "one" is in many others. It does not have the same meaning as singular you.

It does not matter whether you asked someone while they were alone or in front of millions of people: it's just not good manners and it reflects terribly on the rest of fandom.

DA I agree with everything you say here. Also why can't Kate Mulgrew say what she likes? It's her character and even if she doesn't see the question as creepy (and I reckon those questions do sound creepy always) she could be offended that her characterisation has been so misunderstood.

I do get that conventions pay actors a lot, and they are working, it's just another job. On the other hand they don't have to lie just to earn that pay cheque, they just have to be there and do photos and autographs and answer questions.
