considering pseudocide

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There are times like these where I wonder, who would notice if I suddenly stopped using DW/LJ altogether, if my so-called friends would worry, if they would be relieved to not have to put up with me anymore, of if it wouldn't change a thing for them...

I wonder about people in my fandom who commit pseudocide all the time. There's one guy, very involved in fandom, who suddenly deleted everything one day. People still wonder what happened to him three years later. There are writers who haven't updated for years and people still ask if anyone know whether the writers are okay.

You may not realize it but you've made impact in people's lives. Somewhere, someone will be worrying about you.

no-one even cares irl if i stop being social, in person or texts or facebook and disappear. no one ol would either

i know because my best friend got a boyfriend and i sent a few of the usual texts we usually do. normal daily tidbits. i sent only 3 tests. she never replied so i'm not going to try anymore

knew it would happen

thinking of moving to a house in rural and not telling anyone. noone would notice

...how recently did she start dating? This doesn't excuse her behavior by any means, but when people enter a new relationship they are really obsessed with it for a while. I've found that if I just give my friend space, they calm down and everything returns to normal (and then I make friends with their SO, so yay for more friends!) I mean, I've also had friends who didn't care about me, but that was because they sucked.

As another anon said, you might be underestimating your place in these people's lives. There's always the possibility you aren't, but...what if you are? It's your decision of course, but...I think the best thing to do if you really want to give up your LJ & DW is to tell people you're doing it beforehand. Therefore anyone who cares knows and won't worry as so much about why you disappeared.

I thought psuedocide was when you actually fake your own death, not just vanish off the face of the internet. Have I been misinformed?

I thought it meant deleting your username?

That was my impression, too. I've always seen it associated with people faking their deaths/suicides. Not sure if the term has taken on new meaning or not.

Yeah, I've never heard pseudocide/pseuicide used for just deleting your stuff and disappearing, it was always elaborate hoax deaths.

You know what. So do I. Wonder about this, I mean.

I mean, I already have a set of plans and shit for someone to let online friends know I'm dead in case I croaked irl, and in case they do wonder about me. But.... what if they wouldn't have anyways???

Yeah.
