Huh, you know, I guess I've done that sort of thing myself! I got into both Ace Attorney and Metal Gear Solid through fanfic. IMO, reading fanfic for a series you don't know isn't all that strange, because there can be tropes and such you like in the story that you'd appreciate even without knowing the canon. I think what confused was that, since the OP said 'we'll never catch them', I assumed they were writing fanfic for the series they'd never seen. Which, I would at least watch a couple episodes centered around the characters I was writing if I were going to do that- I don't think I trust my skills enough to be able to write the characters without at least that much.

If the OP is enjoying themselves, though, I say go for it! I think I just prefer to do fandom differently is all.
