I'm archive binging on Marvel comics right now (just got up to Civil War), but I'd been reading a lot of the comics fanfic, anyway, since long before I started reading. Actually, apart from Iron Man, I'd never seen any of the MCU movies before the Avengers. I was getting and watching them even as I diving headfirst into fandom. :)

I can definitely see people liking a fandom far more than its source material. I think the vast majority of Merlin fans will attest to that. (There's a reason Merlin has one of the highest AU concentrations in fandom).
