When they start talking about homestuck on FB they all start using hardcore meme-speak and all caps, and are really mean about people who don't like it.

Thus, I'm sort of afraid to ask them about it, for fear of being friend-shunned if I end up not liking it.

They're lovely people for the most part, but they're hardcore in the fandom hivemind about Homestuck, it seems like from the outside, and that can be intimidating.

I'll give you the standard fandom suggestion of "try reading it, if it hasn't caught your interest at all by the time you get to Wayward Vagabond, its probably not your kind of story.

I'd recommend going a lot farther than the introduction of WV. I didn't really get into it at all until Act IV but now it's like, my favorite thing

Homestuck is long. Long and wonderful. It uses it's medium well with flashes and musical pages and gifs and links. It has soundtracks. Not a soundtrack. SOUNDTRACKS. THERE ARE CONCEPT ALBUMS. Over 20 albums overall and counting. (look at the music link on it's front page). Here's an old reliable for the rest:

... alright, I've been hemming and hawwing over checking it out because it sounds like such a time investment and I really don't have a whole lot of that as of late -- but "Jumanji only with the Sims and Spore"? TOTALLY THERE.

.... how much of my life am I going to lose here now? XD

The thing is, it takes a lot of time to catch up, kind of like a TV show that's been out for a few seasons - but once you're caught up the time required to actually *keep* up with canon is really minimal. And the fandom is large and wonderful with a wide variety of fanworks to enjoy, but of course you can choose how much time to put into that. ^^
