Acting is an art form, and like any art it is largely subjective and people are going to disagree. Most people can tell what might be oscar worthy versus what might be razzie worthy, but everything in between is up for debate.

This doesn't mean people are making crap up, it just means we all have different levels of what we like and can tolerate in acting talent. There are also some times when people know the acting is bad, but combined with the writing and the character it doesn't bother them as much as it might bother another person.

Even in Once you can still get most people to agree that Robert Carlyle is an excellent actor. Even if they don't like Rumpel or the writing surrounding the character, on an objective level Carlyle is in the very least "good". So I really don't think all the discussion is people making crap up.
