Hard to put my finger on, but I know it when I see it. There's a sense of superficiality to the writing when the author hasn't seen the show themselves and is merely going on research. Very often, the hallmark is there are useless details thrown around that are not necessary at all to mention, but are there to try and maintain the author's nonexistent street cred.
