Are you being serious? You can't actually wrap your brain around this concept?

One of my first fandoms was Magnificent Seven. Someone in the fandom created an AU concept with the same characters that brought them forward into the modern day as ATF agents. More and more people started to write in that universe and it eventually became at least as popular if not more so than the canon "Old West" setting.

That might be an extreme version of what the anon you were replying to was talking about, but there's nothing wrong with it. What is with the policing of how people fan in this thread? What if people prefer a version of Merlin without all the terrible writing that happened in canon? What if people enjoy the whole Sentinel/Guide concept that was created in The Sentinel fandom but doesn't actually have a shred of basis in canon? I could go on. tl;dr Let people fan how they want to fan. This "not a real fan" nonsense is ridiculous.
