I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not feeling Regina's backstory. I can accept her as a decent villian but IDK, there's just something blocking me from feeling too sympathetic for her. Maybe it's the way the show just keeps piling it on? It just feels forced to me. I'm hoping we'll get more Red or Snow+Emma+Mulan+Aurora stuff soon (even more Hatter, IDC), just...something other than Regina.

The fact that Regina is a rapist is what's keeping me from sympathizing with her, to be honest.

Arg...when I remember those scenes it always infuriates me. Could hardly believe the show was going there tbh.

She lost me from the moment she killed her father, tbh.

Wait, when did this happen? (Honest question, not debating the point)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
She was sleeping with the Huntsman but it wasn't consensual on his part.

I can honestly only remember the "real world" version of that. Are you talking about fairy tale land? Did she take his heart and that's why he was sleeping with her? Or was she blackmailing him? I remember their thing being consensual in the real world (I mean, debating on consent, since she's the only one who remembers their real identities to be fair).

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
In "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter", Regina takes his heart as punishment for not killing Snow and tells him that he is now her pet, and that if he refuses to do exactly what she says, she'll kill him by crushing his heart. She then tells the guards to take him to her bedchamber.

In Storybrooke, the sexual relationship continues, but because Graham's memories were wiped by the curse, he doesn't remember what Regina did to him. So I wouldn't call that consensual. And it was made pretty clear that he wasn't exactly happy in his relationship with Regina, even before we knew what she'd done to him.

Ah yeah, I had completely forgotten that bit. Probably on purpose, because it's awful. I think that was one of the points where I quit the show for a while. They really can't have characters cross that line and then expect the viewer to take their redemption arc seriously, especially never addressing that issue again.

[personal profile] vestigialwords 2012-11-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she was literally in possession of his heart in both Fairy Tale Land and Storybrooke. Seeing how that possession of someone's heart gives you total control over them, there's really no difference between his Storybrooke and FTL situations with respect to Regina.

Except perhaps that the Storybrooke situation actually upsets me more because she managed to normalize/rationalize her behavior. In FTL, it's pretty clear that what's going on is manipulative and nonconsensual, but Storybrooke, you've got Emma disappointed with him for sleeping with Regina, so there's a layer of victim-blaming/horny-guy-can't-keep-it-in-his-pants that he has to deal with. Add to that that he doesn't even know he's being controlled, explaining his own self-loathing, because he doesn't know enough to know that what's happening to him is wrong, and the layers of grossness really don't stop. :\

See, if that was all addressed in the show it would be an amazing story arc.

But it almost certainly won't be.

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about the Emma thing. Damn...

I didn't think that situation could get worse, but I was wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, those 'layers of grossness' was... kinda the point? Duh?

[personal profile] vestigialwords 2012-11-02 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Rude.

I was responding to a comment asking for clarification on how the whole Storybrooke situation was as bad as FTL. Which I did. So... IDK what you're getting at.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, the "killing children" thing comes first (re: the implication that she sacrificed a lot of kids before Hansel and Gretel to the Blind Witch).

... the rape thing is up there too, sure, but killing children was an irreversible Moral Event Horizon for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel this way. Almost like I can accept them as out and out villians but to make it like time and circumstance 'made' them like that is a shit cop-out to me because they're just conciously making bad choices. If you're just evil cause you like it or you're just made that way then ok, but I don't wanna hear they're sob story as an excuse for the shitty things they do. Own it.

I guess I feel like the show is trying to 'woobie-fy' them (IDK how to spell but that word matches).

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-11-01 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't mind learning about their pasts, and it's understandable that some shit things happened to them in those pasts, but then they start presenting it in a way that says “They've been driven to this", and... No.

Regina has been in situations where she clearly enjoyed being evil, and having a shitty past does in no way make that okay or excuse that. Other people go through crap all the time and don't decide to start ripping out hearts, so I don't buy it from her. Also, the only reason she seems to want to change is her son. Tbh I don't feel like she genuinely wants to change, more that she knows she has to in order to keep him happy.
