Have you seen season two? There's more back story (Cora and Rumple's influence) about her actions than Snow White telling about the Stable Boy.

I'm kind of having the opposite reaction to you I think? Love them as villains but I still hate them both as people in "our" world but sympathise with them in the flashbacks. Granted I'm only 2/3 of the way through season 1 at the moment so that could change.

I think when she's nicer she's algo more boring.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not feeling Regina's backstory. I can accept her as a decent villian but IDK, there's just something blocking me from feeling too sympathetic for her. Maybe it's the way the show just keeps piling it on? It just feels forced to me. I'm hoping we'll get more Red or Snow+Emma+Mulan+Aurora stuff soon (even more Hatter, IDC), just...something other than Regina.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that Regina is a rapist is what's keeping me from sympathizing with her, to be honest.

Arg...when I remember those scenes it always infuriates me. Could hardly believe the show was going there tbh.

She lost me from the moment she killed her father, tbh.

Wait, when did this happen? (Honest question, not debating the point)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
She was sleeping with the Huntsman but it wasn't consensual on his part.

For me, the "killing children" thing comes first (re: the implication that she sacrificed a lot of kids before Hansel and Gretel to the Blind Witch).

... the rape thing is up there too, sure, but killing children was an irreversible Moral Event Horizon for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel this way. Almost like I can accept them as out and out villians but to make it like time and circumstance 'made' them like that is a shit cop-out to me because they're just conciously making bad choices. If you're just evil cause you like it or you're just made that way then ok, but I don't wanna hear they're sob story as an excuse for the shitty things they do. Own it.

I guess I feel like the show is trying to 'woobie-fy' them (IDK how to spell but that word matches).

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-11-01 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't mind learning about their pasts, and it's understandable that some shit things happened to them in those pasts, but then they start presenting it in a way that says “They've been driven to this", and... No.

Regina has been in situations where she clearly enjoyed being evil, and having a shitty past does in no way make that okay or excuse that. Other people go through crap all the time and don't decide to start ripping out hearts, so I don't buy it from her. Also, the only reason she seems to want to change is her son. Tbh I don't feel like she genuinely wants to change, more that she knows she has to in order to keep him happy.

[personal profile] saiika_von_maou 2012-11-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah...I see what you mean. I mean, you could still try to love them as villains, but now they're not "evil." They're petty.

I personally love them as "broken" characters. They're not quite evil, not quite sympathetic; they are totally fragmented people. And now they're starting to ADMIT that they are broken people, which is very interesting.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
... There's more to this than pettiness.

I mean, I can see trying to avoid falling into the "evil" and "good" dichotomy, but you're giving me the impression that you don't quite grasp exactly how awful she is.

This is more than being broken.
saiika_von_maou: (Default)

[personal profile] saiika_von_maou 2012-11-01 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're misunderstanding my use of the words "petty" and "broken." I'm not excusing anything or saying they haven't done absolutely abhorrent things. I'm not trying to coddle them; "oh, poor Regina and Rumples; they're so broken." When I say "broken" I mean they are not reacting to anything like rational people. Their motivations are petty. They've both convinced themselves that the only way they can be happy is to control everything. They're broken people who are only just now learning to take responsibility for their actions. As they damn well should.

And they just don't scream "villain" to me anymore, let along sympathetic ones.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Evil people are broken, in the sense that they don't function as normal human beings.
gabzillaz: (Kero)

[personal profile] gabzillaz 2012-11-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
What her mother did was awful, but taking it on a child does not make me feel sorry for Regina.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That is exactly why I think I'd have more sympathy with her if we'd seen her background first before we saw how far she would go. Because seeing all the stuff that happened to her first would create those sympathetic feelings, and then how I interpreted what she does later would be in light of that earlier stuff. Seeing the horrible things she did first makes it really hard to sympathize at all with her.

Pretty much :/
miarrow: (Default)

[personal profile] miarrow 2012-11-01 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think they really should have made up their mind in S1 if they were going to pull the redemption angle or not, because a lot of S1 stuff makes it hard to accept S2 stuff. Then again, I've always hoped Regina would learn better, so I'm trying to pretend S1 was consistent and hope S2 doesn't derail the way it's going (the flip flop last season between who was the big bad was so dumb).

I actually feel the way in your secret about Rumple, I cannot feel bad for him the most I learn about him (that shit with his wife makes me even hate him as regular dude, pre-evil power).

But yeah some of the stuff she pulled with Henry and most of the stuff she pulled with Snow (still not over how RIDICULOUS that reasoning of hers was) is not forgivable.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused. What did Rumple do to his wife pre-evil power? She is the one who left him and their child and let him think she had been kidnapped. He tried to rescue her. Not seeing the evil there. Later, sure. But not there.

[personal profile] vestigialwords 2012-11-01 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Evil? No, you're right, not evil. Pre-curse Rumple was far from evil, but nor was he even bordering on a good husband. He was completely unwilling to compromise for her. She tried to convince him to move, to go to another place where they could be together and not have his cowardice hanging over their heads, and he refused.

And the way that he talked about her was all in relation to her role in the family, her "responsibilities/duties/etc." to him, to Bae. Let's accept that this is a patriarchal society where women are expected to do as they're told, fine whatever. These societies ALSO tend to have rigid expectations for their men as well. In that case, Rumple should be held to similar standards about his societal duties (i.e., fighting). He has the audacity to chastise her about failing her duties while having fallen down on his own. His hypocrisy is astounding.

So, he was pretty much unwilling to do anything for her, but expected her to do everything for him. I'm not saying that Milha was 100% in the right in leaving, but only because of Bae (he complicates matters). But if you ignore him and it had just been her leaving Rumple? Absolutely, she would have been justified. Granted, I don't condone the way she did it (that wasn't cool), but I understand why she wanted out. She had given him a chance to make it right. He just didn't take it.

How quickly he shot down their chance of leaving bothered me too. He didn't even consider it regardless of knowing she was incredibly unhappy.

And after what he did at the end of the episode... I have no sympathy for Rumple.

I find it sorta hilarious how the show keeps trying to make the villains sympathetic, yet I'm constantly liking them less and less because of it.

IA, if you're gonna be evil and make bad choices, own it.
And it was super underwhelming when it was revealed why she has it in for Snow. I feel like she's just mad because even being a grown woman she wasn't able to stand up to her mom and she was seeing that in Snow and taking it all out on her.
