+infinity.
There are many reasons to hate Lori. She crashed a car despite being the only freaking driver on the road. She's a hypocrite and a troublemaker. She can't keep her bratty kid under control. In one of the few scenes where she had a gun she briefly pointed it at herself (it was only for a second but even my mom noticed it and snarked about it).
Frankly, a good chunk of the misogyny in the show can be traced back to Lori. 'Oh Andrea, ever since you learned the very useful skill of shooting and started looking out for the group it's left the rest of us wimmin-folk with more laundry. You're not being helpful at all!'
I hate Lori and hope she gets eaten alive by zombies. Thank God for Andrea and Michonne.

Wasn't a fan of Andrea in S2. She came across to me like: "I'm such a badass, I need a gun! I'm gonna throw a tantrum if you don't give it to me! I think I'll shoot at that thing I think is a walker just because I can to show off - sorry about that Daryl! I'm so much smarter than all of yall! Yep, kill yourself if you wanna, Beth. It's not like you've just had a huge trauma and probably aren't really done processing what's happened yet to the point where you can MAKE a rational decision"! She seemed like less of a know it all fucking dipshit in last Sunday's ep. *sigh*

Michonne I like. She seems legitimately badass instead of a wannabe. Never change, Michonne! •3•

Maybe it's awful of me, but I can't even pretend to like Lori until she actually apologises to Rick for screwing around with Shane. Not saying I don't understand *why* it happened, but FFS, her telling him is basically "So me and Shane... btw, he thinks Carl and I are his now."

I'm such a badass, I need a gun!

It's a zombie apocalypse. They all needed guns, like, yesterday. The second that they found the cache. The imbeciles that didn't arm her are 100% responsible for that little girl's death, in S2.

"But OMG it's not safe to give weapons to children!!! (Or women, apparently. 10-year-old boys? A-ok.)" Yeah, no shit. Travelling in a world full of zombies isn't safe either, but there are 9-year-olds in Somalia using AKs - I'm pretty sure you could teach your average kid to learn to use a basic pistol to the point that they could hit a zombie five feet away from them in a couple of hours. "Check your target, and check what's behind it" - hell, that's all the average adult gun owner knows.

Andrea didn't want her gun back to "be a badass" - she wanted it back because she's not a fucking moron (unlike the rest of her circus sideshow of idiots).

Andrea didn't want her gun back to "be a badass" - she wanted it back because she's not a fucking moron.

And she wanted it back because there's motherfucking zombies wandering about and she wants to have a better chance at not dying.

'Bout to say. Andrea's not my favorite character, but it's the zombie apocalypse. I'd want a gun too. And if someone took mine, I'd be pissed.

The thing about Andrea is, she makes mistakes but her mistakes are honest ones. Like the thing with Daryl. She honestly thought he was a zombie. When she realized she made a mistake, she apologized for it. And yeah, she was kind of annoying last episode, but think about it from her point of view. She just stumbled upon what might be the closest thing to normal in the state of Georgia, hell maybe in the U.S. I'd be okay with sticking around too. The audience knows something is up with that town, but she doesn't.

The other women are good too. Michonne's quote says it all. 'My shit never stopped being together.' Oh, Michonne. How are you so awesome? Carol's started using a gun and interacting with a man who doesn't hurt her. Beth realized she wanted to live, and Maggie is just all different kinds of competent and useful. Yeah, this show has some good female characters that I like and can relate to.

Lori? Lori bitches at Andrea for not doing laundry. I repeat my earlier statement that Lori needs to get eaten by zombies.

/thoughts on yaoi.

I guess my problem with Andrea is really her impulsive tunnel vision. She doesn't think long term. Yes, her mistakes are honest, but a lot of them could be prevented by thinking about what she's doing for longer than two seconds. IMO, she saw carrying a gun as making herself a candidate for badass guard duty instead of lameass laundry duty. Objections that she needed more experience with it and was just using it as a crutch were immaterial to her and she threw a fit like a freaking toddler.

When the walkers overran the farm, she could have escaped when things went incurably to shit by taking a good look around instead of standing there playing Lara Croft in a shooting gallery (and attracting more walkers to her with the noise). For that matter, if she'd left the gun bag when she dropped it, she probably still could have gotten away. Sure guns are a valuable tool, but guns are not worth shit when they're out of ammo and we already knew that was a luxury that was running low.

I have no problem with her being enamoured of the town. The town does look really attractive, and I can definitely see wanting to set up residency. I'd be hard-pressed to pass on it myself, even if I suspected the Governor was pillaging and murdering to get more supplies. Given the alternatives on the outside, I might be pretty cool with it.

Yeah, the other women are a good bunch! Carol in particular really is coming into her own as a strong, dependable person. Beth's sort of starting to seem like the optimistic one of the group to me, insisting that even if the worst may be coming, they should consider the idea that something good could happen. Maggie's transformation from semi-rebellious daughter to strategic warrior is really amazing. I loved that she figured out how to kill the walkers wearing the riot gear after taking a second to think about her angle of attack!

Because a gun is the only weapon that exists and is never going to run outta ammo. Right.

[personal profile] visp 2012-11-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
... and that has what to do with anything?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
And even in a zombie apocalypse, a person who doesn't have the proper respect for a weapon and sees it as a substitute penis (sorry, that's all I can equate her obsession with getting one as after the whole "why are we the ones doing laundry?" discussion) is a MONSTROUS liability. She wasn't demanding a weapon to feel safer, or to protect the group, she was doing it so that she could sit on top of the RV and not cook or clean or be demoted to the roles the other women (for whatever their personal reasons) were taking. Fuck, she could have gotten away with the group if she'd just been willing to drop the goddamn guns and run!

A person who just sees a gun as a thing to wave around is a time bomb that's just going to injure themselves or others, worst case scenario. Best case scenario, they make a lot of noise and attract lots of walkers. Nevermind that guns have a finite usefulness. Run out of bullets, and your AK-47 is all but useless.

At the point where she shot Daryl, she chose to try and show off by taking a long shot on a target that wasn't an immediate threat, and which was about to be clobbered to death in a large open area by three very aware individuals. The odds of a walker being able to grab/overpower/even scratch any of them before they clubbed it to death were miniscule. I'm sorry, but it was pure showboating, and it nearly killed at least one person. (Had her aim been worse, she could have hit one of the other guys, too)

Shane's "Fuck it, let's just shoot them, it's a goddamned zombie apocalypse!" approach, which resulting in the massive shoot-down of the walkers in the barn, is probably a direct contributor what attracted such an enormous herd of walkers directly to the farm.

They all needed to be able to defend themselves, sorry brah. On the off chance any of them were separated, and unable to acquire assistance, so as not to be completely helpless. Not just Andrea, but all of them. Refusing to arm members of the group makes those members keeping the weapons away directly responsible for the deaths of those that died because they were unarmed.

To do otherwise is to put the lives of the other members of the group at ludicrously unnecessary risk, and the fact that the little girl died is entirely on the heads of the adults who made sure that she would be helpless in the event that what happened, happened.

Every single member of that group should have been armed. If not with a gun, then at least something - it's not that hard to crack open a human skull with a bat, or a pipe. And every single member should have been contributing to the maintenance of the group (cooking, cleaning, etc.) as well. That would have been the intelligent, responsible thing to do.

Of course, everyone in that group (aside from possibly Daryl) was an imbecile who put the whole group at risk on one if not multiple occasions, so I'm not sure why you're singling out Andrea in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, they did- they really did. And I do wish that had been acknowledged sooner on the show. I never said they didn't. Bats, hammers, pipes, anything could be a weapon, and should be - naturally. At least they do seem to have gotten better in that regard this season. The idea that was pushed (and I can't help but notice anytime a zombie style story comes up) that guns are the end all, be all of defense against the dead is one of my pet peeves. Save your guns for the living and the odd sniper shot of necessity - or clearing an area you don't know well and have very poor vision in like the prison. *sigh* (Freaking hell, why was old man Hershel even IN the clearance team? He's the second most valuable player they've GOT!)

My problem with Andrea in particular is the whining, foot stomping, and the tantrums, coupled with weapon use that I can't help but see as blatant irresponsibility and disrespectful handling. (Protip: If you want to be taken seriously as an adult and/or persuade people that they should do something for you, that is NOT how to do it.) I liked her (and Amy) very much in S1.. seeing her regress into a petulant toddler just infuriated me in S2. She turned into something I absolutely despise. I'm hopeful she's through with that, and I can start liking her once more.

Trust me though, I could go on a rant about the basic stupidity of EACH of the characters, lol! (Know what would be awesome? If they worked to make functional bows and arrows and teach as many as possible to shoot with them! Long range weapon, reusable ammo that you can make if need be, and silent to shoot! More crossbows like Daryl's would be fantastic, but bows would be a good stop gap. :D)

If they worked to make functional bows and arrows and teach as many as possible to shoot with them!

This was more or less my thought exactly, once it was established how effective Daryl's bow was against zombies (in other universes, where the brain has to be more or less destroyed to kill a zombie, a bow is not what you'd want to have). Why they haven't done this is beyond me.

That said (and I wrote a whole essay about this after ragequitting the show in S2, I'll see if I can find it if you're interested) reloading spent ammunition is not anywhere near as difficult as the producers of the show seem to think it would be. This is the Southern US - you'd find the proper equipment for it in many garages, and failing that, the back of any decent gun store. Many, many gun owners do it as a hobby or to save money - it is not a special elite skill. Running out of bullets does not mean they can't just make more.

Barring that, just finding a mould would allow them to make their own casings out of scrap metal and modern primers are hardly as difficult or dangerous to use as black powder - making new gun cotton would be trivial. Reloading shotgun shells is even simpler.

The primary advantage of a bow, of course, is the lack of sound and that's still the case, but people in these shows always seem to act like nobody knows how to make cartridges in their garages anymore.

But, see, that's part of why people call the show sexist. "All the proper women are doing laundry and only miss stupid I-want-to-be-a-man wants to fight, isn't she a silly," has some implications, dontchathink?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-01 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Proper respect for a weapon, dumbass. Not "proper women."

I see reading has still not advanced past a 3rd grade level for you.

If you truly can't see how saying "she only wants a gun because she's trying for a replacement penis" is sexist then there's really no help for you.

YES, oh dear gods.

Though - i love Carol and Maggie, though Beth is a little wet for my taste. Andrea gets on my nerves a bit but she's at least trying not to be a dumbass. Michonne just kicks all kinds of ass.
