Seriously unpopular opinion time: I don't think Shinkai's art is that good.

More specifically, there are maybe 5 minutes of really stunning art in a given film and everything in around and between is blah. Not bad, but blah. I'd probably look more favourably on the art if it was all average rather than 30 seconds of "wow!" and then 15 minutes of average before the next 30 seconds. It really negatively affects my enjoyment.

Not my only unpopular opinion of Shinkai but definitely the one I'm keeping anon for.

I think it's pretty to look at, but it gets boring quickly.

Works better as wallpaper than as a movie imo.
