I never enjoyed ghibli movies either. Whenever I voiced a dislike I'd be hounded by people telling me "omg ghibli is amazing you just don't understand!"

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And I never like Makoto Shinkai's films. /shrug

Everyone has different opinions, and that's okay.

Though, I have to wonder, is the "Ghibli's films weird endings" a cultural thing? Because a lot of his stories deal with Shintoism/Japanese mythology/concepts that can weird out western audiences (the idea of Kami, for instance). Did works like Whisper of the Heart/The Cat Returns also weird you out? (If you've seen them.)

Well I'm interested to check out that other one, because that pictures is lovely, but if you say you prefer it over Ghibli films because they're "too weird", that's a little discouraging.

We must have had deeply different childhood experiences because for me being a kid was endlessly weird, and that is why I find Ghibli films so affective. Not weird in a consistently traumatic or nonsensical way - just like the films - but just full of incomplete understandings and familiar things alternating with things that were totally mystifying. That is why I love Ghibli films - is that kind of "weird" realy absent from Shinkai's films?

Maybe try recommending the other movies, without hating on Studio Ghibli as you recommend the other stuff, and that'll get people to check it out instead of wanting to fight with you?

I sorta feel like that with Ghibli's movies as well. I haven't checked Makoto's movies, but I'm in love with Satoshi Kon's movies (Specially Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika).

The Studio Ghibli films sometimes get lost in Miyazaki's politics, I think (on the other side of the aisle, I could barely stand to watch Summer Wars it was so heavy-handed, straight into yamato-damashii territory) though they're always well-told and technically skillful.

Haven't seen any of Shinkai's work, but from browsing the plot synopses they seem awfully mushy. Confirm/deny?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the unintentional (?) recommendation! I haven't seen anything from Makoto Shinkai yet, but I love scenery/animation porn, so I'll probably look for some of his movies :)

Concerning Ghibli: Princess Mononoke is the shit. Everything else mostly bored me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like all the big Japanese directors that are well known in the West.
However, as far as weird endings go - I think it's a matter of perspective.

I for one saw 'My Neighbor Totoro' when I was five years old, so I kind of just rolled with the 'weird endings'. It wasn't until I was older that I realized his movies dealt with political issues ( re: The idea of Pollution in Spirited Away - case & point - the River Spirit. ) & Buddhism/Shintoism.

That being said - I'd say Satoshi Kon's movies are the bread & butter of 'weird endings'. I mean, Hollywood did have to get permission to use scenes from two of his movies ( Perfect Blue & Paprika. )

TLDR; It's all subjective.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ghibli's films are visually beautiful but I've always hated the writing and how the conflict is handled in pretty much all of them. The pacing is never very good and I always feel dissatisfied at the end. I think Princess Mononoke was probably the best in terms of plotting, and Ponyo was by far the worst.

I've never seen any of Makoto Shinkai's movies but I do know plenty of Japanese directors who I like better.

That's definitely okay! I like them both, but they both have their strengths and weaknesses, and it makes sense that you'd prefer one of the other. That said, given how much respect Makoto Shinkai seems to have for Hayao Miyazaki, I doubt he'd be too fond of the idea of downtalking Ghibli films in order to build his own up. I think if you focus on the positives of the films you love instead of being frustrated by the popularity of the films everyone else loves, you'll end up a lot happier and have an easier time finding people who'd be willing to try your favorites.

Sorry, I know this sounds kinda preachy. ;_;

I haven't seen enough of his works, only 5 Centimetres Per Second, but I enjoyed that one more than most of the Ghibli films I've seen. To me, Ghibli just always seems populated with characters I don't give a damn about and so why should I care about what's happening to them.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both.
To be honest, they both have their strong and weak points, and even then it really depends on your taste.

Makoto Shinkai makes pretty movies and it's visually impressing until you see how he drew characters in his oldest movies (eg: Voice of a distant star). That, I find jarring, but he improved a lot so that's nice.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So...should I check this other person out? Because I'm not sure if you're recommending them or not. I enjoyed the settings/environments of the Ghibli productions. Reminds me of old myths and stories. Not to mention pretty.

What is Makoto bringing to me? Why is it better stories and artwork. I'm trying to be interested in both, but you've soured and confused me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Defo felt that way for Ponyo. I was told it was adorable and I just found the whole movie very creepy and unsettling. o-o

spirited away is the one thing i really adored by ghibli. i've seen others and not really been too affected by them. i haven't seen much of makoto shinkai's stuff but what i saw didn't really do much for me. that said, i think both have some fantastic artwork happening.

it all comes down to ymmv and i would probably take more mamoru hosoda over them all any day. the girl who leapt through time and the old digimon movies will always be the loves of my life.

I like both of them. At least. I like that movie on the bottom. I had a lot of fun watching it.

Ghibli has always been hit and miss for me with story. Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke? I really liked. But Howel's Moving Castle and Ponyo? Eh, they were okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What films did Makoto Shinkai make? Never heard of him/her.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Studio Ghibli is hit or miss for me. But I've seriously never watched Totoro with anyone who didn't end up loving it. My mom said it was her favorite movie ever, and my brother (who is in his thirties) has probably watched it more than I have (he says it lets him escape back to that feeling he had when he was a boy).

Meh, I'm not a fan of Ghibli, but it's more to do with the fact I'm not a huge fan of their art style + something about their movies just never seems to catch my interest. I'll watch them, think their pretty and *want* to get into them...and it always ends up with me being 'It was pretty, but didn't do much for me.' -shrugs-

[But you're right about not wanting to mention this unanon - way too many people I know would hound me for this.]

I can understand that, especially if you don't agree with Miyazaki's views on man vs nature. I still prefer Ghibli though, if we're comparing. I was totally taken with Voices of a Distant Star (I still think the concept is compelling and the execution was sweet and heartbreaking) but I find that the rest of his works are all trying to grab hold of that same genuine bitter-sweetness and I think they mostly just end up mushy and sentimental.

I think Miyazaki was an amazing director... of tv shows in the 70s. I like a few of the older Ghibli films (Totoro is my favorite because I saw it when I was 12, and my sisters were little then and I could relate to it I guess). But I agree that Shinkai is better at doing the whole "feel good uplifting atmosphere" thing than Ghibli these days. On the whole though, you're sort of forgetting a director who is better than both of them -- Satoshi Kon (RIP)
