The Studio Ghibli films sometimes get lost in Miyazaki's politics, I think (on the other side of the aisle, I could barely stand to watch Summer Wars it was so heavy-handed, straight into yamato-damashii territory) though they're always well-told and technically skillful.

Haven't seen any of Shinkai's work, but from browsing the plot synopses they seem awfully mushy. Confirm/deny?

Very mushy and essentially the same story. Granted, Miyazaki enjoys taking plots/characters from other works (Earthsea, Howl, etc.) so his works obviously have more variety but... eh... after you've seen one Makoto Shinkai, you've seen them all.

Unless you like the scenery. The scenery is god-tier, I will give him that.

Like the entirely unnecessary war he threw into Howl's Moving Castle?

Ugggh, I like Ghibli's other movies but I hated his Howl's so so much.

I liked Howl's well enough until I read the book and realized just what a wasted opportunity the movie was. Every plot change made from book to movie was for the worse.

I liked both versions -- and I'd read the book several times before seeing the movie. I just put them in different compartments in my head.

That was the first thing that came to mind, though there are a lot of other examples.

We get it, Miyazaki. You're a socialist. So am I! That doesn't mean we have to shoehorn the plight of the worker and the folly of war into everything we ever write.

Awfully mushy, unlikeable characters. Only thing that I like about them is the backgrounds.

If you're going to watch a Shinkai film, start with She and Her Cat. His other ones are beautiful but too long and boring.

Though I did like Children Who Chase Lost Voices, his newest one.

Confirm. I find Shinkai's stuff way too introspective and slowly paced. And it's the same obsessive romance story every frigging time.
