(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 03:38 am (UTC)(link)My only annoyance with people's enthusiasm for Ghibli, is that it's pretty much the only studio they know. It feels like every animation/art student I run into only talks about Miyazaki / Ghibli as the sole example of being open minded and informed about "anime"-- because the rest of anime is bad and not worth studying, but Ghibli is OK because it's not "animuz". Those same students seem indoctrinated to only want vis dev jobs in feature animation at either Pixar or Dreamworks or Disney. I just feel like it's a huge bandwagon they're all jumping on; it's just not cool to say you don't like those big studios, it's so easy to name drop them and sound open minded, and in doing that it feels like they consider Ghibli Studios alone represents all of whatever is worth studying in Eastern animation.
I know people genuinely do love those studios, and I admire them too, but the endlessly singleminded worship those studios get is disheartening. It just grates on me whenever art students trying to get into the industry talk to me about animation and whenever we get to Japanese animation, they'd only name they'd ever bring up is Miyazaki's, whether out of ignorance or reluctance to admit anything else.
