Well, it's a bunch of bologna anyway, so it doesn't bother me. The meanings and definitions of them have changed so much, what does it matter? Usually in fiction, they're being portrayed as accurate and truthful--if that's the case, just pretend the reader sees them for what they really mean, not the made up occult crap.

It matters for the same reason why if you were writing about the Olympians, you would spell their names correctly as well as rightly correspond them to what they are a god of. Otherwise, it would be like writing Ares as the god of the ocean rather than Poseidon. You don't believe in those gods but you still want to get them right.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god that first sentence confused me so much because I thought you were talking about Olympians as in winners of the Olympics...

We are talking about tarot, mythology and the occult, why would I be talking about athletes?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
hence the confusion.
cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (Bill is awesome)

Because the Olympics, as in the London 2012 ones, might still be fresh in their minds. Therefore, brain fart?
diet_poison: (Joltik - adorable)

Yeah, I did the same thing. Brain fart.

Also, can I mention I love your Bill icon? I'ts adorable :)
cloud_riven: Cute cigarrette box and coffee cup, with smiley faces, holding hands! Adorable! (bff)

All these flatulent brains

I need to make an icon for this.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So did I, but my mind autocorrected it to "what they were good at," that is, referring to athletes by their correct sport.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
..ahem. The names, personalities and roles of these guys were anything but carved in stone. The various (extremely historically accurate) accounts of their deeds and opinions are conflicted as well.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...The accounts of Olympian Gods' deeds are extremely historically accurate?

ROFL

"Usually in fiction, they're being portrayed as accurate and truthful--if that's the case, just pretend the reader sees them for what they really mean, not the made up occult crap."

...what?

Tarot cards were created with particular meanings in mind. The "real meanings" are the meanings intended by those who created them, not the literal interpretations of people who can't grasp basic symbolism.

It doesn't matter if they're bologna. The "made up occult crap" consists of the actual meanings of the cards, given that the cards themselves were made up for the purpose of doing occult crap. If tarot cards had been created for something entirely different, or had they been invented as a device in fiction, then you would have a point. But that's not the case.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you bonkers? Tarot cards were originally playing cards. For playing cards. That's like saying the regular four-suit deck was "created" for divination.

Watch where you tread there, anon :[.

The cards are what they are and have symbolic meaning that goes back ages. Whether it's a true art or a parlor trick is beside the point.

I read tarot cards and collect them, but they don't have symbolic meanings that go back ages, especially if you're working with a RWS inspired deck.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was a bit of an over-statement. But long-established-meanings still apply.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Pfft, they go back like a hundred years, maybe.

They've been used as an occult trick for 2-3 hundred.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
And within that 2-3 hundred years they've gotten established meanings, which shows ignore for the sake of teh dramaz, which is the source of my annoyance. Whether they're "real" or not is entirely beside the point.

They date back to the 1400s. Although the form has evolved over time as most things do.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
As only playing cards. As only playing cards.

Yep. Their use evolved to include divination as early as the 1700s.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. Fucking thank you, and LOL at all the gullible nitwits who believe in this tripe, plus GRR at all the people exploiting them for money or influence. Makes me angry.

Yeeaaaah, and what all of you crying "tripe" are missing is that that is COMPLETELY BESIDE THE POINT of this secret.
