weird reserve

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)

I have this shyness related to food. I can cook for my guests and eat with them and I can eat a meal that someone else has prepared. But I cannot stand the idea of anyone looking at me cooking for just myself and/or eating alone and then bam! someone comes by. I get this irrational feeling that people judge me based on what I eat.
So, whenever my roommates use the kitchen I’ll keep my distance and let them be, waiting for my turn when they’re finished. But when I use it they will barge in and put me so ill at ease… I tried to explain but they cannot grasp that the concept of privacy could apply to anything else than the bathroom (or throwing you out of the appartment so they can fuck their girlfriends at will).
So I’m still ill at ease *and* they managed to make me feel even more ridiculous.

I'm the same way, anon, but for a different reason -- I apparently don't cook properly (I chop ingredients the wrong way, I put too much water in the pot, I whisk incorrectly, etc., etc.), so I get embarrassed whenever someone else watches me cook and starts to "correct" me. My sister's terrible about it, since (having watched all of the cooking shows) she thinks that she's a super chef. I think it's okay if the end result looks and tastes good, but nevertheless I can't stand letting other people watch me cook.

I hope you can manage to get your concern across to your roommates. (They don't sound like particularly decent people, anyway, so I hope you can find a better living situation in time, too.)

Wow. Tell 'em to fuck off. Jayzus, there' not 'incorrect' unless it's poisoning yourself or burning it to charcoal.

This. I had a roommate try to tell me I didn't make scrambled eggs right. I told him if the end result was an egg which had been scrambled, I was fine-and I wasn't ever going to feed him, so why did he give a damn?

I'm exactly the same way. I never even try to explain it to people because it feels so awkward. I don't even always mind cooking with other people, where you split up the tasks and everyone does a bit, but I can't stand being watched.

Hm, that's unfortunate...

Still, I always think of the kitchen as being a public part of the house and kicking people out of it can be kind of inconvenient. Maybe it depends on how your house/apartment is laid out, but in my apartment, for example, the table is in the kitchen so I'm often sitting there doing homework or dicking around on the computer while my roommate is cooking. Or I might want to go in there to get a snack or a beer, and I feel like it would be unreasonable to tell me I couldn't walk into my own kitchen when I need something. The kitchen is kind of a hub. But again maybe ymmv with that?

Maybe you should address the food shyness. Sounds like it could be awkward for everyone.

Also, good luck. I'm sorry you're in an uncomfortable situation. =/
