(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)I don't find her frightening. But I find her displeasing to look at. Unfortunately, this is inextricably linked to her character in The Shining. In that movie, she is this cringing, mousy mess. It's always bothered me. I've always been like, "but what did he see in her before he went crazy?"
And then the logical side of me kicks in, and I'm like, "this is the portrait of an abused woman." He chose her because she was mousy, and his treatment of her made her a cringing mess. So then I feel bad, because, wtf, I'm disliking a woman who's been abused because she's acting like she's been abused. And then, on top of that, I'm taking her actions and marrying them to her physical features. Is there not something wrong with that?
I reassure myself with the fact that I don't sympathize at all with Jack Torrance. He's a monster, and you can tell he's a monster from the very beginning. The insanity was always lurking just beneath the surface. At the same time, however, my feelings about Wendy are kind of fucked up.
OH GOSH FEELS.
