The women were all victims and never in control of their own lives. They weren't characters, they were props.
Watsonian complaints: The mother at the farm falls over for nothing, is only able to use her protection skills as a mother despite living on a secluded farm in a part of the world that's obviously gone to hell, and is easily outrun by a small child. It's a wonder she even functions daily.
Also, apparently she's completely unable to have an honest conversation with her child about his birth and early childhood for no apparent reason.
And come on, the main character's dreamgirl, his wife didn't even have a single line of dialogue.
If you think this is awesome, I have no idea what you think is bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)i felt the film was watchable after we got the farmhouse storyline, but I didn't really like anyone and the plot holes were very annoying.

The way it turned out made his motivation more understandable, but damn, she was really nothing more than a motivational prop for him.
The farmhouse storyline was good, I think, but the way Emily Blunt's character was infantilised (though yeah, I've seen a lot worse) was annoying.
I thought the beginning was meant to be really horrible, and to show that these men were really empty shells living empty lives. I have no problem with that (I actually thought that part was really good, and it was interesting seeing JGL play such an unpleasant character). But the way women were excluded speaks of a deeply rooted sexism in Hollywood. It's as if they can't imagine women having certain roles, being remorselessly violent and generally shitty people in the same vein as the male characters in Looper. It's the type of sexism that puts women on a pedestal, but it's still sexism. It's removing the ability to take charge of your own life and active/dominant character traits from women.
I wasn't to bothered by the plot holes, but I rarely am in (one-shot) films (unless they're really big). They're too short, I can imagine there are explanations we don't get to see.
