Ugh, can we give it a rest already? YES USING FANART IS BAD BECAUSE OMG SOMEONE SPENT HOURS WORKING ON IT
Don't you think that making the series itself took longer? Christ, if it's an American artist, most people will credit and the problem with chans is the lack of sources for any pictures ever. People use doujinshi all the time too. That's fanart too. Untie your panties, seriously.

That's what I really hate about the chans. The Japanese are more anal about this stuff than we are. Most clearly state on their website that they don't want their art posted elsewhere, and many will actually shut their sites down if they see it being used for icons or whatever. They won't give a damn if you found it on *chan or not.

I think that is where the most of the wank comes from.

Personally I couldn't care less if someone used fanart in their icons. It's when people use them after the artist clearly states on their site that they don't want their art to be used that I have the problem. Regardless if the person found it on 4chan or whatever.

Doujinshi...meh. If you paid for it or someone else who paid for it offered it to you, do what you want.

Not that I disrespect the artists, but it isn't that hard to put in a little signature or watermark like deviantartists or American artists. I credit those that have the little url in their art, and I, for one, don't think it takes away from the art as long as it isn't plastered over the subject of the art. I credit if I have it, but 99% of the time, I don't.

4chan is great for pictures if you have nothing in particular in mind, and it's hard to keep credit if you're only looking for the pictures. If you're using them specifically for icons or graphics use, then they're at fault, but most people that look are just looking to have the beautiful work of their favourite character. I have folders with images saved from everywhere of my favourite, but painfully obscure character. If I were to see a thread on 4chan, I would share, but otherwise, I keep them to myself.

Haha, but only like one person pays for the doujinshi and then it gets scanned and all over the internet. And sometimes translated if you're lucky.

My work? D: I WORK?
What a shocker.

Agreed. Even a little-but-readable signature on the corner would suffice.

Some artists still do the shutdown regardless of getting credit, which I think is a bit much. (I think shutting down your site because people are using your work in general is a bit much too, but what do I know?) Maybe it's a culture thing? Either way the whole fanart brouhaha hurts my head, on both the artists' and the users' part.

I'm the same way. I don't do anything with the fan-related pictures I download to my own computer, other than look at them and maybe put them on my desktop. I see nothing wrong with that. As for showing off someone else's work, I can see this from both sides. It's a good way to find lovely pictures of your favorite character, but at the same time there's the concern of certain folk who pull the ultimate no-no and claim the work is theirs when it isn't. I doubt anyone has to worry much about that on 4chan, though. =)

*laughs* So true, so true.
