The lack of tag filtering on AO3 is killing me softly. Sorting through a thousand Teen Wolf stories with the trope I want to get to a fandom I actually care about is getting old.

Oh god, I hear you. I actually have mostly stopped going to AO3 because of tagging issues [not tagging, tagging characters/pairings that don't show up, mis-tagging, the whole nine yards.]

I went through a fic binge after work on Saturday, and it took so long to find anything. I love AO3, but I'm not up for rifling through eight billion stories I couldn't care about like I used to do on ff.net. So frustrating.

Used advanced search. It is a perfect tool for this, and imo actually more powerful than tag filtering was. Just run a search for "Your fandom" "Desired Tag" and you'll do fine. Or even -"Teen Wolf" "Tag" if you just want to filter Teen Wolf out. It's really a very useful tool.

I'll try that in the future. It's never worked terribly well for me, but then again I didn't fiddle with it as much as I probably should have.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What were your issues with it, if you don't mind me asking? Because it's always worked for me and I kind of wonder if I'm missing something with how a lot of people don't seem to like it.

It takes a little fiddling, but once you figure out the logic, it's pretty useful in my experience.

Mmm, I guess I had problems figuring out which terms to put where, namely whether or not keywords should fit in the 'Any Field' or 'Tag' portion. I'm rather partial to lists of thing with subheads over refined searches, so I'm never much of one to use advanced search options on sites unless I absolutely feel that I have to.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, I see. Well, for the first part, I pretty much just ignore the "Any Field" portion and just search by "Tag" usually. Since that's what all the keywords to search by are.

But if it's not a way of searching that works for you, that's the way it works.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty familiar with Boolean Logic and even I hate the advanced search. It isn't just imperfect, it's completely useless on a platform with a free tagging system. If you're looking for something in a large fandom, the advenced search will help you narrow things down, but you're still going to be stuck going through thousands of results that may or may not be relevant. Throw in the way it orders the displayed results and it's no surprise that many people who used the site before May have stopped using it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, AO3 is doing a beta with a sorting system that I like: http://next.ao3.org/

I just used it to sort through a fandom for another meme. Works well IMO.

Ooh, I very much like this. Thanks, anon.

Guess I better start putting stuff up again.

You just reignited my interest in a03.

Welp.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's about time.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
...I guess I don't use Ao3 enough to notice what the difference is.

from what i can tell, the 'search within results' is new, and so is the 'other tags' thing

apparently it's coming back within the next couple weeks, and i sure hope so, because i've read so much less fic since tag filtering got taken off last summer. at least we'll have lots of fic to catch up on when it comes back

[personal profile] barnabys_bane 2012-11-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

When I'm on a binge I will sift through mountains of crap to get what I want (it's how I used to do things on ff.net), but when I just want a new fic I don't like putting that much time and effort into it, so I usually just end up bookmark hopping. Unfortunately, people aren't all that keen on bookmarking via AO3 in most of my fandoms that I've noticed, so it's not a very effective method. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
It was coming back in May. Then June. Then August (they didn't even try for July). Then September. Then they ignored us until October when they had no choice but to say "soon but we don't know when". Basically, don't hold your breath.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
It will probably be back when that author finally updates that abandoned WIP that she insists isn't abandoned (even though the last three or four "updates" are all some form of: "I promise I'll have the next chapter posted by next week!").
