Sounds like OP is kind of afraid of retaliation if they unfollow a bunch of people who all kind of have a hivemind. You sound like a douche but I'll ask - what would you do if someone unfollowed you and a bunch of people you know over tagging?

but I wouldn't care. I probably wouldn't even notice. My blogs basically a scrapbook of things I like. If someone's upset I tagged or didn't tag something, we can go our mutual different ways.

I mean that's reasonable and I'd do the same thing. (I do tag my posts because I think it's the decent thing to do, though.) But if someone unfollowed me I wouldn't take it personally.

I don't know that everyone is like you, though - sounded like the OP had reason to be worried should they unfollow a bunch of people at once. Hopefully it is not as big of a deal as they thought/are implying.

Tumblr doesn't alert people who unfollows them, just gives you a lesser number. Unless they're VERY ANXIOUS about how many followers they have, they're as likely not realise until well after the fact. People generally don't bring up old news.

That is good to know. I know some people can be very catty.
