Why is mutual following, on both twitter and tumblr, such a huge deal. Useless drama imo.

Because that's pretty much your friends list. Of course people would feel insulted when someone takes you off their friendslist.

Mutual followers tend to share some of the same interests, but when they start posting stuff you don't like but you still like other stuff they post then it's easier to filter between the two if you tag it. Herp derp.

idk. I've mutual followed a few friends. So far so good on not being spammed, but if it was Sherlock and his cock 24/7 I would unfollow. If they asked I'd go "sorry man so much things I didn't like on my dash, but we've still got email/other ways to chat online and I check your tumblr out every now and then"

I guess having a neat list is crazy meaningful. Seriously, you'd think knowing that having to subscribe to friends would lead people to know it's not the end of the world. Especially seeing how easy it is to keep in touch without following jfc.
