I had somehow been around fandom for a long time (mostly pre-internet, though) before I ever heard that stereotype. It wasn't until a bunch of us did a personal pics meme that I became aware of it because the meme instructions said something about that stereotype. Ironically, it was true in that circle, but I don't think any of us cared. I've never had such a great group of friends and stay in touch with them all, even if we aren't as close as we once were.
