I hope they really weren't meaning to be nasty, I'm sorry if that did happen.
Could it possibly be that they started off by being unbelieving because saying 'That's you? No way!' is less embarrasing than saying 'Holy shit you're hot' because that can sound a bit creepy online, right?
I've seen pics of fandom friends and if they are pretty sometimes you *don't* know what to say. You don't want to give the wrong impression, and you know they probably realise they know they are okay looking, so what do you say? I try and just complement them without drooling too much, but other people defend themselves by just almost blanking it, I've seen it happen. It's like they don't want to admit the elephant in the room.
Don't judge them too harshly? Maybe they didn't mean to hurt your feelings, incredible as that may seem.
