Ugh, I'm sorry this happened to you. It's awful when people peg their sense of "you're one of us" to thinking you have the same problems and flaws. Not all fans were bullied. Not all fans are fat. But the ones who hang out here because it's an accepting space and they have nowhere else to go skew the stereotype (without meaning to or trying).

Fans are doing some pretty subversive things. We're using the for-profit media to create new, free things for each other. We're thwarting the monopoly that companies thought they had on what gets commercialized where, and when. We're making friends and contacts across borders who make us look askance at nationalistic propaganda. There are a lot of reasons why the powers that be cast fans in such an unflattering "who would want to be one of those losers?" light. But it's sad when people internalize it, and even worse when they try to bring everyone around them down. I don't know (or care) if the people who insulted you are ugly. I do know that they behaved unjustly and atrociously with you, and I am angry on your behalf that this happened. I am indignant that people are still treating their so-called friends this way. It's hard to realize you need a different social circle, but like a lot of the commenters above me have said, these people didn't trust or value you. They turned on you for a perceived privilege. Nobody needs that. You deserve people in your life that are loyal to you and secure enough in themselves to be supportive of your gifts and accomplishments. I've met plenty of fans who know how to be good friends. So ... keep looking?
