One thing that fascinates me, and I love, is how different fandoms can be universes apart, in terms of what they like, dislike, and consign characters to the inner circle of hell for. I can't generalize, and it's wonderful. I have one fandom where the almost-universal OTP would be the triggery, controversial underage ship, anywhere else. I have another where people have no issues about writing extreme body modification and master/slave dynamics. In yet another, there's a character that I expected a sizeable minority to peg as the quirky, loveable psycho, and NO. They hate him with a blazing passion, want him to DIAF, and it's almost impossible to find meta because (despite being a major character) the fandom loathes him so much that they prefer not to speak of him. The last example sort of pained me, but you get the point. So I completely understand how you could go into a new fandom, expect your favorite to get no love, based on prior experiences ... and be completely mistaken. You'll get used to it, I'm sure, and if you tell the people you annoyed exactly what you told us, I bet they'll forgive you. A lot of fans go through some amount of culture shock when they're figuring out what their new space's norms are.

I just wish fewer of them would start yelling about how "OMG, the natives are Doin' It Wrong" just because X would have been a huge taboo in their last fandom.

Okay, I gotta know who this character is. Please?

Sure. I was thinking of Nisei Akame from Loveless.

(The guy in my icon.)

My intro to the fandom involved getting caught up with the latest chapter of the scanlation, which involved one of the protagonists breaking his finger during an interrogation, and posting something in the main shoku-dan forum about it. You could practically hear crickets chirp in that thread. No one responded and no one posted anything similar. I went back through the logs of the biggest comm on LJ - raburesu - to read what meta there was, and it was about the same. I found, like ... one thread of character discussion tagged Nisei. In the chapters that were full of him, people would still talk about anything but him, when they responded at all. He's gotten somewhat less pointedly ignored over time, but man. When I started, it felt like no one would waste the words to say "I hate him," much less engage in character discussion. I'd never seen fandom snub a character that completely before. And granted, he's vile, but I really wasn't expecting that. I mean, it's not like the other characters fandom loves to pieces are always such nice guys.

Oh wow the Loveless fandom is still alive? I must find this shoku-dan asap, thanks!

(And he's not a favorite, but I've never hater Nisei. :) I feel a little sorry for him now, really.)

The Loveless fandom is definitely still alive, but shoku-dan disappeared some time ago. The main scanlation comm now is called Kamibana, the main place for general news and stuff is raburesu, like I mentioned. You need to join to see their locked posts, but it's a one-click thing. There's a vibrant rp community on Tumblr, plus some good blogs. Turn-loose-the-swans does chapter previews as soon as a new chapter comes out in Japan. And there are several comms and amazing artists on DA. I like Herzfeld.

What I can't believe is that last month or the month before, Volume 9 of Loveless placed third on the New York Times' weekly manga bestseller list - ahead of One-Piece and Bleach! The fandom exists, but that floored me, because it's nowhere near as big or vocal as that would imply. I guess we have a lot of closeted readers and lurkers?
