Either apologize and move on or start a sock and rejoin with a fresh start.

Sucks you made a mistake, but now you know better.

Good luck in your future fandom endeavors.

Oh OP, this is why you scope out a fandom for a while before contributing anything public to it! But seriously, I don't think people are going to care (or even remember) a month from now. Just...sit back for a while, be a mature adult about things, and you'll be fine!

Coulson has that affect on people.

(Now just wait for my essay on why Sitwell is adorable and we need more of him in the SHIELD show...)

*snort* That was actually my first thought, but then for some reason I doubted that's who they meant. The "drowning any mention of the character's flaws" bit made me wonder what those flaws would have been, because canon-wise we don't get much to go on.

It took me a few weeks to realize that no one (like, LITERALLY no one in the universe, it seems) was about to bash me for my choice in favorite character in one of my fandoms too -- I thought people wouldn't like him and that I'd have to defend him from everyone, but it turned out that everyone loved him. I was so fucking happy you don't even know, there's something so gratifying when everyone else just gets it, y'know? But this is why it's a good idea to lurk for a while, babe. ;)

Also "pic very vaguely related"? Um...it's a dark blue and black background. How is that related to anything? *iz confused*

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I mean, it's really shocking to be used to no one liking a character we love, but finding a fandom where we love the character everyone loves? Talk about a cultural shock man... (don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's difficult to adjust, God do I know about it)

The Rules of Fandom, by Barney FIfe

Now here for excited newcomers at "the Rock", which as you will find out to your chagrin, is an eerily appropriate nickname for any comm, message board, or blog in a sufficiently-established and dedicated fandom, we have two basic rules.

The first rule is: obey all rules.

The second rule is: do not write embarrassing self-important rants all over the walls without lurking first, because it takes a lot of hard work to erase embarrassing self-important writing from the fandom walls.

Teen Wolf secret? Idk, but your secret is pretty fitting for just about any one tbh, but I'm kinda feeling the annoyance at prematurely defensive Stiles fans :u

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm almost positive that it's about Stiles. I've seen a lot of "I just can't get that interested in Scott, sorry guys. I think Stiles is my favorite!" and it's like...yeah, you and 98% of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I immediately thought Stiles too but I wasn't sure if it was just an auto-fill bc that's the fandom I lurk the most lately, lol. ...Stumped how the background pic would be related to him tho.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
My immediate reaction also. Fitting because I really wish people would acknowledge his flaws and darker tendencies.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you could try just liking what you like without feeling a need to be so defensive about it? It's not like whiny rants become any more endearing when the character is less popular.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Rumpel from OUAT?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
this was my immediate thought.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"pic related"? Wut? How?

Because it represents the inner depths of their favorite character's soul?

...

Yeah, I got nothing.

...Of course now I'm just trying to figure out what fandom/character it is. Jesse Pinkman?? Mr. Gold? My beloved Richard Harrow??

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
A "new" fandom "early this summer" popular on tumblr, seems like it's a big and very active fandom from the way you're going on about it, and a silvery blue-black background that is somehow related....

I'm calling it. It's The Avengers. Right? I'm like 90% sure I'm right.

IDK who the character would be though. I would say Coulson but I don't know what major flaws he has (maybe all his property-seizing X-Files shenanigans in "Thor"?) Or maybe it's Clint, whose popularity you underestimated because he had such a small role?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if it was Loki? That's all I keep thinking and just laughing. Oh man, that'd be the best.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds like me, haha. I ALWAYS love the hated characters. And, weirdly, they're usually good guys/girls. Like I'm not fapping over some douchey villain and hoping the rest of fandom sees what a woobie they are, they're legitimately good people, but because they were shown as GOOD and then had flaws revealed over the course of the story, people only saw the flaws. Whereas if you've got a douchey character who is revealed to have done one awesome thing the fandom shits itself with pride for that character.

Yeah, I like the hated characters... the only time I can remember liking a popular character was... um...

....
...
.........
Sirius Black?

I'm trying to figure out why people would make you feel you needed to apologize for this. If I saw some meta that discussed a character in detail, even if it was meta about why a character everyone thought was terrific was terrific, I'd enjoy it as an essay. I guess I'd need to see the meta to understand, or know the average age of the fandomers.

This is so fascinating. You are a person who has serious difficulty with adaptation. I'm...I don't know. I imagine that must cause quite a few problems.

I want to study you.

One thing that fascinates me, and I love, is how different fandoms can be universes apart, in terms of what they like, dislike, and consign characters to the inner circle of hell for. I can't generalize, and it's wonderful. I have one fandom where the almost-universal OTP would be the triggery, controversial underage ship, anywhere else. I have another where people have no issues about writing extreme body modification and master/slave dynamics. In yet another, there's a character that I expected a sizeable minority to peg as the quirky, loveable psycho, and NO. They hate him with a blazing passion, want him to DIAF, and it's almost impossible to find meta because (despite being a major character) the fandom loathes him so much that they prefer not to speak of him. The last example sort of pained me, but you get the point. So I completely understand how you could go into a new fandom, expect your favorite to get no love, based on prior experiences ... and be completely mistaken. You'll get used to it, I'm sure, and if you tell the people you annoyed exactly what you told us, I bet they'll forgive you. A lot of fans go through some amount of culture shock when they're figuring out what their new space's norms are.

I just wish fewer of them would start yelling about how "OMG, the natives are Doin' It Wrong" just because X would have been a huge taboo in their last fandom.
