I hardly ever finish the games I start. I get stuck at a hard part or a part that requires a lot of grinding and lose interest. Then I stop playing for a few months and when I come back to the game I'm all "wtf was I doing?" and I restart the game. So, yeah.

I feel you. I've completed a few of those (BoF2, Seiken Densetsu 3, Phoenix Wright, Golden Sun!) but in general I agree with you. I only completed Seiken Densetsu 3 since I kept losing to the boss and I didn't want to bother leveling so I saved it and returned a year later, and beat the boss completely by chance haha talk about anticlimax when you forget the entire game's storyline but finish the boss.

idk, especially in Pokemon games it's so bad for me since it requires so much grinding before the end of a game, but it's not even 100% the grinding that gets me.

I love finding out what games are about, learning their tactics and techniques and magic and worldbuilding and storyline but once the final boss pops up I'm like I'VE SEEN 90% OF IT THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH

I know that's fucking stupid but I just can't put myself to finish things. I usually find some youtube link so I can see the ending.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never finished a game either. I'll finish the storyline but then I lose interest in the post-game.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-11-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't finish many games. Older games for sure, since they were more often shorter. But games these days are so long and with so many side quests and stuff that I eventually lose my interest before actually completing the game/main story.

Have you considered trying interactive fiction, like visual novels? It seems like something you'd enjoy more. Or just watching Let's Plays.

I sorta used to be like you, but I've gotten to where I beat more games now and enjoy it! I just needed to stop stressing out over how badly I sucked and just worry about enjoying myself.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-11-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. I don't remember writing this.

Seriously though, I'm terrible at finishing games. Ever since I was a kid and I kicked ass on the Star Cup of Mario Kart 64 and then cried over the bittersweet, slightly somber music during the end credits, I've had trouble finishing games. Idk, man, it was sad for some reason. Guess it kind of scarred me or something.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-11-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...what do you do if you never finish them though? YouTube the ending? Watch walkthroughs from wherever you stopped? Because just seeing the ending doesn't sound satisfying to me, a lot of great things happen along the way! (Also, some games are complex enough that if you miss sections you can get confused by the story pretty fast.)

IDK what to say to this...I'm sorry?

The same thing has happened to me with games that either don't fully grab my attention, or games where the game-play frustrates me. I have went back and finished some of those games later (and enjoyed them more than I ever would've expected), but not all of them are particularly worth it imo. It all depends on the game. If it stops being fun for you I can understand not completing them. Every single time seems a bit much to me, but...I know you can't help how you feel, so *shrugs*.

I am exactly this way, OP. Give this website a try: http://www.amaranthia.com/

The Aveyond series is my favorite, and to date is the only game series I've ever finished in my life. The battles are pretty easy and pretty straightforward, so it's little trouble to go through the story. And it is one hell of a fun story. If I'm reading you correctly, I think you'll enjoy these games.

I generally finish games, but not always - and some of my favourites, I've never beaten. Like SMT Nocturne >.>

Most of the time it's because I don't get far INTO a game before I get distracted or lose interest. In DMC4 I never beat the final boss. Whoops.

I have a kind of OCD about this, I think. I've played hundreds of games, and can think of very few I haven't finished.

Boy, that doesn't speak well for my social life, does it.

My little sister has finished all of two games. Spike McFang, and Uncharted 3. She's mighty proud of the former, but technically she finished the ending of the last one seeing how she kept getting stuck and having to have someone else finish a spot for her to proceed all the way to the end. No big.

You sound like you need better friends though.

to be fair, tla is pretty long, and some of the parts (hello, trident of ankhol), aren't super-intuitive unless you're paying close attention. for me, that was what got me into the series, but i know it was a deterrent for other people, especially since the first game wasn't nearly as long/arguably convoluted.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Few people actually do. It just seems more pertinent to do so when it comes to a game with a narrative.

I guess if it really bugs you just go and play games that are totally open-ended.

The only games I've finished are Dragon Age and the like. Partly because I could sit down for 30 minutes - hours, do a quest or two and not lose the story, even if there are weeks (or months) in between.

I bought FFXIII because I wanted to play a FF game. I never finished FFX (life happened and I lost whatever the hell was going on). Do I like the story of FFXIII? Yes. But I need a damn guide in order to play the game. Dragon Age, I can turn on and start and it's not overly complicated and I can google questions if I have them. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but yeah. I haven't touched FFXIII in two or three months.

I haven't finished that many either, come to think of it. lol
It usually has to do with being stuck at a hard part that I can't get past. Or having to do too many boring side missions or grind-fests. I may lose interest because of those.

It's gotten better since the Internet has grown, I can now check FAQ's and guides when I need help. And as much as I hate to admit, the trophy/achievement system also motivates me.

Hmm, in a way I envy that you can. Once I start a game I'm like OMG MUST FINISH EVEN IT OT TAKES A YEAR OH AND BTW I WANT TO DO ALL THE SIDE MISSIONS.

Shut up, brain :(

I usually finish games, but I have a few exceptions. The more freedom a game offers, the less likely I am to finish it, because I like dicking around more than completing the mandatory stuff. Like, Elder Scrolls Oblivion is a game I've poured over 70 hours into, but I've never finished the main quest because IDGAF. The optional quests are way more fun.

I finish most games, but I've lost interest in some partway through (usually because they're too easy for me). There's nothing wrong with that. It just means those games--or maybe games overall--aren't for you.

You could try watching/reading Let's Plays? You'd get at least some of the experience then without playing yourself.

I think I've completed ten or less games in my life, compared to the dozens I actually own. The only ones I can remember is Golden Sun, Kingdom Hearts II, Children of Mana, and Cooking Mama 1 / 2.
kryptoncat: FFIX's Vivi is reading a book; magic is coming off of it. (THIS LOOKS INTERESTING)

[personal profile] kryptoncat 2012-11-07 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't completed some of my favorite games (including FF9!) yet. I just love sidequests too much. I already know how most of the games I've played end, and I read fanfiction sometimes before I even play the game. Saddest of all, I haven't picked up a video game in quite a while, but one day I will pick up this hobby again!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-07 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I rarely finish games. Anyone who's going to be judgie over it can suck my nonexistent balls.

Off the top of my head, games I've finished were
Dishonored 'cause it is honestly a small game. I took 65 hours on my first run.
Dragon Age 1, but only so I could port the save to Dragon Age 2
ME3
and Fable 3 because it was a piece of shit I couldn't return...

Everything else...rarely finished. I don't play many linear stories and tend to get distracted exploring until I lose interest in the game (around the 80 hour mark)
