What he can't do, Chloe does for him. If he's stumped, ask Chloe and she'll figure it out.

It's been a while since I watched the show, but isn't that kind of what makes her unique? She's like this teen genius computer hacker?

And that's one half of what OP apparently dislikes about her. The other half being: people are attracted to her.

I always really hated that double standard in fandom. Guy can do a bunch of cool stuff, all the girls want him, and can easily vanquish villains? Oh, what a cool dude! Girl is even mildly competent? OMG, MARY SUE! :/

Aren't those guys called Gary Stus? And a lot of the superheros can fall into that category if the writers aren't careful. I agree about a double standard existing.

Why does being a genius make one a Mary Sue?

This is part of why I don't think the term means much of anything anymore. Basically, if someone is at all special in any way (or, god forbid, drives the plot)*, then they are now a Mary Sue. And I don't get it, because I don't know about you, but I don't want to watch or read about a bunch of average people who look average and only do average things and are completely lacking in any characteristics that might make them occasionally stand out.

*(And that's another thing: most people aren't going to write about characters who don't have anything to do with the plot progression, because that just doesn't make any damn sense. For example, of course Robert Jordan wrote about Rand and Friends and not a bunch of random people on another continent where nothing much was happening. Why? Because no one wants to read about a bunch of random people who are neither impacted by nor have any influence over the major events of a story. But apparently, there's a Problem now if you write about the movers and the shakers, because it's Too Convenient that they Just Happen to be Where Things Are Going Down and that they Just Happen to be Involved with the Things that are Going Down. OF COURSE THEY'RE INVOLVED. THAT'S WHAT THE FUCKING STORY IS ABOUT. IT'S NOT CONVENIENCE; IT'S THE NARRATIVE. Christ, it's like saying, "isn't it rather convenient that Winston Churchill just happened to be alive and in a position of political power when World War II broke out? Something's not right there, clearly.")

Okay apparently I have a lot of feelings on this and I need to chill.

Why does being a genius make one a Mary Sue?

In the first few seasons, it felt believable. She was very intelligent, sincere, and willing to help others within her power. It was like once she graduated high school, she became his MacGuffin brain who could do ANYTHING regardless of training. I know they tried to cover it up with Oliver eventually becoming her financier, but it seemed a little ridiculous that she knew her way out of EVERY situation. Didn't she even start reading Kryptonian at one point?

It is what's special about her. This is all based on the early seasons, I think she might have changed in the later seasons. I just haven't gotten that far yet.

But I thought she failed most of the other Mary Sue requirements. She's not always right. People aren't constantly describing how beautiful she is. She isn't the magic solution to all problem in the story.

Mostly her skills are used as a beefed up version of Google for Clark, beefed up because she can hack- which isn't a massive power in a show where the lead can lift tractors over his head and light fires with his eyes. In all honesty her computer savvy qualities are used as a plot delivery device by the writers. They rarely emphasize how smart she really is to be doing all of that, or what a hero she is when the information does help save the day. At best there's a "Thanks Chloe" or "You're a Life Saver". Except for a few episodes. To be fair though I know she got some crazy powers later on in the series.

The writers actually loved Lana a lot more, they thought she was the real magic of the show. I always thought she fell closer to the Mary Sue side of things.

Agreed about Lana, and eventually Lois. I had nothing against either of them, but I could never figure what they were supposed to be doing on the show at all when Chloe was right there, being smarter than a post and doing useful things other than being the Hottest Girls In the World. And having actual chemistry with Clark, as much as I never wanted them to hook up. But Lana and Lois had "comic canon" support that Chloe didn't, so. Maybe they should have cast Chloe's actress as Lana and retconned the character as a nerdy hacker and investigator....surely it would have been a very different show.

That would have actually been pretty interesting. I'll admit to being one of the fans who thought that Chloe would eventually take the pen name Lois Lane, before we found out she was related to the actual Lois. I haven't seen the Lois episodes yet so I don't know anything about her character, I'm guessing she's pretty different from the comics. I just thought it would have been an interesting twist on the comics, and the relationship between Chloe and Lana, if she would have been Lois all along. I was surprised when I found out that Lois had been introduced on the show. I wasn't upset or anything, I just thought the other way would have been something new to explore.

It's 4am and I'm rambling, so I apologize.

Oh, it never occurred to me to think "Lois Lane" could become Chloe's pen name, but it sounds like a really fantastic alternative to the awkward way they introduced Lois as a separate character who originally never dreamed of being a reporter like Chloe did, but eventually tripped and fell into the role along the way - and never really made it work, IMO, but I've always liked Chloe better. (I'm one of the fans who thought they'd just kill Chloe off to serve as Lois's tragic inspiration and Clark's new sidekick...assuming there were other fans who were as pessimistic as I was, haha).
