Terrible place for poor people in general, I think, which is why I hated the way that all the people downstairs were either selfless saints and perfectly happy with the class system, or raging villains (I only watched the first season, so maybe that's changed). So even though Thomas and O'Brien are horrible people, I was still cheering for them. Not that I would like them if they were real people - just in a 'fuck you, Fellowes' kind of way.

I never got that vibe. There were annoyingly noble people downstairs, but there were some of those upstairs too and there's enough nasty people all over the map. And there was that one girl who wanted to be a secretary, and Branson and Sibyl who were like "fuck your social classes."
