I agree with you, and I adore him. Look, he can be a shittastic person, but I don't think life taught him to be anything else. I am still sad about what happened with the soldier he cared for--that was the best Thomas we ever saw. And well, look what happened there. He extended himself, and he saw that yep, things are going to be shit, always.

So I don't blame him a bit for how he acts.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
It would have been a weird derail for the show just at that moment but GOD I yearn for what could have been had that soldier lived. Thomas was INSTANTLY improving when he was around.

I always find it bizarre when people think that being a cruel self-centered asshole and having a sympathetic backstory that gives believable reasons for why the character is such an asshole are somehow mutually exclusive.

Like, would they prefer a character who's randomly an asshole just 'because'? How boring would that be? Some people are assholes just 'because', but they make very boring characters unless they're terrifyingly evil or inhuman or something.

Agreed. Having a believable reason for being an asshole still makes you an asshole. Not that they can't be fun to watch.

I like him even if he's an asshole sometimes.

It's a crime to like him? Whoops. I really loved his character a lot because he is a terrible person. You don't need to make excuses for him just because it was hard to be gay in early 20th century. Some of the shit he does may be a defense mechanism, sure. But, some of the shit he does doesn't quite qualify for the "defense mechanism" excuse. And, he's kind of an idiot, which endears him further to me.

I really need to watch the newest season.

I really struggled to like him in series 1 cos of the way he and O'Brien treated Bates. But now I'm kinda bored of Bates. Oh well.

He was still a bit too much of a self-serving dick for my liking in bits of series 2 but yeah, I started to warm to him more and definitely sympathise now because it is becoming apparent he is the way he is for some of the reasons you've listed. Also his reaction to the Sybil thing was just :'( - that episode destroyed me and Thomas's reaction was part of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think that he ends the series in a pretty sympathetic light considering.

It's a crime to like Thomas? Oops. No one told his Tumblr tag!

You should hang out with different people!

My section of fandom is pretty much all Thomas fans. lol.

We're also Mary fans.

And I don't think that is a coincidence. I agree that Thomas is kind of an ass as a way to protect himself against a world that would hate him just for who he is. And I think that in series 1, Mary was cold because she was angry at a world that would deny her the right to inherit because she was a woman.

Not OP, but where is your section of fandom? It seems like I keep finding the pockets that are anti-Thomas which makes me sad.

I'm right there with you. I mean, I'm always well-aware that he's a terrible person who plays twisted games rather ineptly and hurts other people, and that about 90% of the bad stuff that happens to him is completely his own fault and he totally deserves that.

And then there'll be something like the blind soldier, and all I want is maybe for that poor, horrible bugger to have some kind of honest happiness in his life, instead of something that he just thinks will make him happy.

I feel the same. All I have wanted from the show is for him to be happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Terrible place for poor people in general, I think, which is why I hated the way that all the people downstairs were either selfless saints and perfectly happy with the class system, or raging villains (I only watched the first season, so maybe that's changed). So even though Thomas and O'Brien are horrible people, I was still cheering for them. Not that I would like them if they were real people - just in a 'fuck you, Fellowes' kind of way.

There are plenty of times when I am either angry, amused or slightly disturbed by the way he acts. And then there are those moments in which I just want to give him a hug or somehow transport him to a time when he can be himself.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen series three, OP? He's gotten a lot better about not being such an asshole. He's just gotten creepier, but I still can't hate him, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
i think i'd agree if he didn't seem to get such...joy out of being such a terrible person. and in the most recent episode people (not everyone, obviously, but...) are bizarrely okay with him being gay, considering the time period.

Spoilers for season three here!

Oh, Thomas. He isn't nice, no, but he's had to be so careful, and proper, and rigid his whole life, and not let his secret slip....

I was so moved by his grief over Sibyl, and then to let Mr.s Hughes mother him, for just a little bit, and tell all his troubles to....

He's not nice, but i do like him and feel sorry for him, and i was pleased to see him not get screwed over. Maybe he'll learn....

Are you kidding? Everyone loves him now! Ever the bitter hipsters at ONTD love him now. I, of course, loved him from literally the first second he made eyes at Owen Sleater outside the house in the first episode, because the secretly-tragic assholes are always my favorite, but everyone seems to have gotten onboard since this season. As well they should.

(Thomas/Edward forever. never ever EVER OVER IT)

It's not just the gay: the moral of the show is basically "you need to accept where birth and fate put you" and Thomas doesn't do that. He's basically painted as a terrible character for trying to further himself in a society that doesn't want to let him.

Yes, he does shitty things and his character is questionable, but he doesn't have a lot of options. He's actually amazingly unbitter for someone with his life.

I've always been sympathetic to Thomas because to me he is Miles Edgeworth, if Edgeworth had been born about a hundred years earlier and had been the person he was rumored to be.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ABOUT THOMAS THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT

Hell, he even says it HIMSELF in season two, when he talks about how he refuses to be turned into a "victim."

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
See, thing is: I wanted to like him. I really did. But shit, he's so fucking stupid. I mean, how many times can your plots and schemes backfire on you before you notice that hey, maybe you're not good at scheming and should be more fucing careful?
