i think i'd agree if he didn't seem to get such...joy out of being such a terrible person. and in the most recent episode people (not everyone, obviously, but...) are bizarrely okay with him being gay, considering the time period.

Not really. Bates and Flopbert already showed that they knew back in series one, as did Mrs. Patmore. And Mrs. Hughes is too awesome not to stand in his corner. Other than them, we don't really know the opinions of those who weren't actively against him in the whole fiasco.

Most of the servants knew he was gay, and it was hinted that Daisy was rather thick for not realizing it. It was much more of a spurious gossip thing then than something to alienate someone over.
