the first thing people should know about tumblr is that folks there are melodramatic and uneducated. from people getting easily checked facts completely wrong to forming suicide support groups in case romney wins (are you people fucking serious though, like really??) it gets super ridiculous.

it's also hard to avoid that kind of thing, since even if you can avoid people who slip some of that whack shit in their blog every now and then, not everybody is going to tag their controversial stuff. when it comes to politics i tend to expect this kind of thing from tumblr's userbase. part of me thinks a lot of them overreact like your example to come across as these emotionally tormented victims in hopes that people will rally around them for attention. it's weird, it's like they want to put people on the defensive for no specific reason. idk. i just try to ignore them, even if i see a post going around with skewed facts or clear bias. if it's a popular post it's already too late.

there are conservatives like that too though. tumblr is just one of those nonpolitical social media sites that a certain political demographic has dominance over.

They were forming suicide support groups because there were people talking about committing suicide. That should never be taken as an overreaction.

I dunno. If I was american and romney won, I would move right out of there before he takes my passport away.

haha what?? why would he take your passport away?

there's a lot of confusion on romney's views which i fully expect since he flipped on a lot of them (most opponents of hopeful incumbents do this, it's a strategic move) but there are lots of things people are taking out of context. i don't like the guy at all but he wouldn't "take your passport away" at all. i can't tell if you got that from incorrect information about his immigration views or if you're implying he'd take away everybody's passports so we'd be forced to live in his ~dictatorship, lmao.

plus, that has nothing to do with tumblr collectively overreacting to the point where the fear mongering was causing people to have suicidal thoughts. not only is that ridiculous of tumblr as a whole but it's also ridiculous of those who were sincerely ready to kill themselves if romney had won.

DA

Basically, this. I do not like Romney at all and would not have liked it if he won, but killing yourself? There still would have been a democratic majority in the House, so he wouldn't have been able to get as much awful shit done as they feared. The areas where he honestly really would have fucked things over are foreign policy (which is already a bit of a mess) and some social programs. Which would have sucked, but it wouldn't have been the end of all things, just like Obama (as much as I like him) isn't the savior who's going to come in and wave a wand and make everyone in the nation magically more tolerant, and Congress is going to have to actually work with him to get anything done. The President is an important position, for sure, but it's not like the position offers Sauron-like levels of power.

The fear-mongering on Tumblr is always pretty mind boggling, tbh.

it genuinely upsets me that so much fear mongering happens, for either side. i'm sure some of the fear mongers aren't aware that they're so misinformed, but i bet there are some who do it on purpose, and end up manipulating the emotions of less politically educated people. there's so much misunderstanding regarding the gop these days that it's just proven to me that fear mongering clearly works, and i wish it would stop. i don't care who people vote for as long as they are voting with a clear and politically knowledgeable mind, not one clouded by misinformation and sketchy pathos.

i feel like most people who publicly post things along the lines of "if romney wins i am killing myself" or "please don't go outside if you're black, white ppl are sooo mad right now" are doing it to siphon sympathy from people who fall for it and make everybody else look like assholes. in the end it just makes me laugh, and i'm sure people who agree with them do think i'm a douche for it, but i consider myself a politically aware person and i'm not as easily swayed by melodrama.
